"The latest technology implemented by IBM and VMware fully met our requirements for security, availability, scalability, processing speed, resources optimization, and ease of ownership and administration." - Madam Hélène Sol, IT Manager, Centre Hospitalier d’Avignon

Virtualization, Virtualization - Server
Centre Hospitalier d’Avignon, a public health facility offering emergency, short-term and long-term care, has deployed VMready to automate and secure the hospital’s network so a critical patient records database can run securely and efficiently using VMware vSphere in an IBM BladeCenter® environment.
The Centre Hospitalier d’Avignon needed a solution to help reduce implementation risks and that would be designed to secure patient databases in a VMware environment.
The Centre Hospitalier d’Avignon deployed IBM System Networking 1/10 GbE switches with VMready and VMware vSphere to help achieve a trouble-free approach to virtualization and secure the patient records.
The IBM VMready solution is designed to enhance availability and security of patient database applications, eliminate the need for manual intervention of virtual machines, and enable scalability and optimization of IT resources.
VMready®, by IBM System Networking, delivers the virtualization-aware networking that secures a patient database running in a VMware environment for one of France’s largest healthcare institutions. Centre Hospitalier d’Avignon, a public health facility offering emergency, short-term and long-term care, has deployed VMready to automate and secure the hospital’s network so a critical patient records database can run securely and efficiently using VMware vSphere in an IBM BladeCenter® environment.
Tests confirmed that IBM System Networking’s VMready software worked seamlessly with VMware vSphere4 to eliminate the need for manual intervention whenever VMs (virtual machines) moved from server to server and helped ensure that only authorized personnel could access patient records. The hospital has now deployed IBM System Networking’s VMready, along with IBM BNT® 1/10G Uplink Ethernet Switch Modules across its IBM BladeCenter data center environment for an easy-to-administer, secure and trouble-free approach to virtualization.
IBM System Networking’s VMready solution is the first network virtualization solution that automates the data center for dynamic “live” migration of virtual machines. VMready enables multiple IBM BNT 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet switches in separate IBM BladeCenter chassis to operate a single virtual switch using stacking. The VMready “network aware” design monitors data centers’ virtual machine environments to ensure that when a live virtual machine moves from one physical host to another, the destination network is automatically reconfigured to preserve essential security, access and performance policies.
VMready, integrated with IBM System Networking Ethernet switches, provided additional functionality such as Virtual Machine awareness and Stacking, which are major advantages for VMware usage as they may provide increased redundancy and bandwidth per server. In addition, VMready switch-resident software can run on IBM System Networking’s 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet switches without adding any server CPU overhead and works with all versions of VMware ESX Server.
About IBM System Networking VMready
In summary, by using IBM System Networking 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet switches and VMready, data centers can deploy virtualized applications and services that can migrate dynamically across a secure, highly available infrastructure. VMready:
• Discovers virtual machines as they become active on the network
• Monitors virtual machines to detect the start, middle and end of a VMware VMotion migration
• Automatically enforces network settings on the physical destination server to match the original configuration
• Supports virtual machine migration across a blade chassis, rack or group of racks
• Interacts with management consoles for added management visibility and control
