"We don’t have a lot of space, so the compactness of the iDataPlex relative to its processing power made it an excellent fit for our institution. Likewise, its slim design is optimized for heat dissipation, which means that it requires less energy to cool." - Vudhichai Parasuk, associate professor of chemistry and head of the computational chemistry unit cell at Chulalongkorn University

Chulalongkorn University is the foremost and oldest further education institution in Thailand, founded more than 100 years ago in Bangkok. Its motto, “The Pillar of the Kingdom,” encapsulates the university’s philosophy; it trains students in all disciplines, and many of its graduates have gone on to become the leaders in the business, government and research sectors that form the backbone of the country’s economy.
To retain its status as one of the region's foremost research centers, the computational chemistry unit cell at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand needed to boost the performance of its supercomputer. The University's Green Campus initiative made it vital to find an environmentally sustainable solution.
The University deployed 76 IBM® System x® iDataPlex® dx360 M3 servers with Intel® Xeon® 5600 series processors and Mellanox InfiniBand high-speed interconnects, linked to an IBM System Storage® DS3500 with 24 TB capacity. A total of 600 compute cores are available to researchers.
Many simulations now run 8 to 10 times faster, boosting productivity and helping researchers tackle bigger scientific problems. Efficient iDataPlex servers keep the solution cool and cost-effective.
