Overview

Established in 1978, PTT Public Company Limited is a large oil and gas corporation based in Thailand. It is part of the PTT Group, which is made up of several leading petroleum and petrochemical companies, and it is the only company from Thailand in the Fortune 500 companies list. The company owns many natural gas pipelines in the Gulf of Thailand. After PTT collects the gas, it extracts and sells the valuable gases including ethane, propane and liquid petroleum gas.

Business need:
PTT Public Company Limited, a large oil and gas company in Thailand, needed to upgrade the system it used for running simulation software in order to reduce the time required for simulations.

Solution:
PTT deployed a high performance computing solution using an IBM System x® iDataPlex® dx360 class server including Intel® Xeon® processors to run ANSYS Fluent software used for simulations.

The IBM solution reduced typical simulation time from one month to less than one week, lowered power consumption and costs and provided seamless support for the company’s simulation software.

Case Study

Established in 1978, PTT Public Company Limited is a large oil and gas corporation based in Thailand. It is part of the PTT Group, which is made up of several leading petroleum and petrochemical companies, and it is the only company from Thailand in the Fortune 500 companies list. The company owns many natural gas pipelines in the Gulf of Thailand. After PTT collects the gas, it extracts and sells the valuable gases including ethane, propane and liquid petroleum gas.

In addition to producing natural gas, PTT also produces a wide range of fuels and petrochemical products. PTT is one of the main aviation fuel suppliers for Thailand’s airports. It also produces retail automotive gasoline; automotive and industrial lubricants; bunker oil for freighter ships, gas carriers and passenger liners; and natural gas for cooking, power generation and industrial processes for Thailand’s cities.

Challenge
For various applications, PTT uses ANSYS Fluent flow modeling and simulation software, leveraging its powerful analysis and simulation capabilities to solve a number of production challenges. Some examples of past projects include analyzing and redesigning a burner unit used in the gas-separation process; identifying and solving an issue in an amine distillation column; and developing a new, long-lasting design for a small branch piping system.

Although PTT was able to successfully use its ANSYS software for a number of projects, the company faced some key challenges. It needed to improve the software’s capabilities to adapt to different applications. PTT also wanted to reduce the time it took to perform a simulation. The company began to look into high performance computing solutions for an answer. More specifically, PTT wanted a solution that could start small with the ability to scale to a large cluster, was capable of growing for future expansion and had full support for ANSYS software.

Solution
Working with IBM, PTT deployed a high performance computing solution that was able to meet the needs of demanding simulations, which require a large amount of computing resources. Replacing the Lenovo workstation that was previously used to run ANSYS Fluent, the company deployed an IBM System x® iDataPlex® dx360 class server solution including Intel® Xeon® processors with a total of 144 processing cores. The iDataPlex solution provided a much-needed improvement to the previous system, due to its high performance, minimal footprint, high density, energy efficiency, simplified manageability and scalability.

Benefits
After deploying the IBM solution, PTT was able to quickly recognize several key benefits in the production environment. Most notably, the company was able to vastly improve computational speeds—reducing typical simulation times from one month to less than one week. PTT was able to take advantage of a key design element of the iDataPlex system by significantly reducing power consumption and costs. The company also valued the open platform of the Intel processor-based solution, which was supported by ANSYS software. PTT also appreciated the high-level of responsiveness demonstrated by IBM Services, helping the company to efficiently meet its computing requirements.
