Case Study

Located just north of Dallas, Collin County is one of the fastest-growing counties in Texas and the United States, and is currently home to over 750,000 residents. The Collin County government provides services to the booming area through a technology infrastructure that is among the most sophisticated and successful in the state.

Challenge
With surging demands on its IT infrastructure, Collin County needed to find ways to control costs while improving service levels for its constituents. Over time, the organization had accrued an ad-hoc collection of servers and storage devices that filled 28 racks in its data center. And one of the biggest problems was that every time additional capacity was needed, the installation and provisioning of a new server took an entire week.

Solution
Collin County turned to IBM Premier Business Sirius Computer Solutions for a complete infrastructure solution. Sirius Computer Solutions is a nationwide consulting, sales and services organization that has been providing IT solutions built around IBM products for 30 years. For Collin County, the solution included 26 IBM BladeCenter HS21 XM blades optimized for virtualization with VMware, and an IBM System Storage N6040 enterprise disk storage system. This solution enabled new levels of efficiency, including consolidating one application that was spread across 20 servers onto a single blade. Altogether, the organization was able to eliminate half of the racks in its primary data center, reducing operational costs while boosting application performance.

Benefits
· Saves money on licensing, energy and hardware costs
· Reduces the data center footprint from 28 racks to 14
· Reduces the time to provision new servers from days to hours
