Customer background

The Dawn Meats Group, established in 1980, is headquartered in Waterford, Ireland. As one of Europe’s largest food processing companies and meat suppliers, Dawn Meats is part of the Queally Group, Ireland’s largest privately owned agribusiness. The Queally Group is a principal supplier of Irish beef, British beef, Irish pork, British pork, Irish lamb and British lamb to Europe’s leading retail outlets.

Business challenge


In 2001, Sterling began providing EDI services for Dawn Meats. When several of the company’s customers required the AS2 standard for communication a few years later, Dawn Meats implemented Sterling B2B Integrator for its powerful and secure B2B integration capabilities. Sterling B2B Integrator supports multiple protocols and is a component of the Connectivity and Integration portfolio, a complete solution for all internal and external integration needs.

We still had communication issues, however, explained John O’Shea, IT Project Manager for Dawn Meats. That’s when it became clear that these issues were directly related to the value-added network we used at the time. In addition to daily connectivity problems with customers and absolutely no visibility into the data transfer process, onboarding new customers was lengthy and painful, often taking weeks to complete. To make matters worse, the network provider offered very poor customer service.

Since John and his colleagues had such a strong working relationship with Sterling, they began discussing additional capabilities. Dawn Meats had a very clear-cut goal: optimize B2B performance by implementing a cloud-based service that provides secure, reliable connectivity and end-to-end visibility.

Solution

Now Dawn Meats utilizes another component of the Connectivity and Integration portfolio: the Sterling B2B Collaboration Network a cloud-based service that provides secure connectivity and collaboration for customers and business partners.

At first we felt a bit of trepidation about migrating our customers to a new network because they include some of the largest retailers in the UK and Europe, John explained. But the people behind Sterling Community Development Services immediately put our concerns to rest. The migration went smoothly and was completed on time.”

Sterling Community Development Services combine proven processes with dedicated resources to help companies build, manage and expand their B2B communities. The multi-lingual capability they offer will be essential for future European customers. John said. We are confident they will be onboarded quickly and easily.

Indeed, the onboarding process is significantly faster now. What used to take three to four weeks with the previous provider now takes one to two days with the Sterling B2B Collaboration Network.

Instead, we spent hours tracking customer orders or invoices manually. If customers didn’t receive our invoices, cash flow was significantly impacted. We were blind with the previous network, but now we have full visibility and full confidence in the Sterling B2B Collaboration Network.”

Dawn Meats had no visibility into electronic customer communication in the past. That means the company didn’t know if customers sent orders or received invoices, which could significantly affect cash flow. Now Dawn Meats has complete visibility into customer collaboration, enabling the company to proactively resolve issues, which optimizes B2B performance and overall business processes.
