"Liberty Profile, once it is installed in a developer’s workstation, will potentially save, let say,an hour -- maybe more than that -- a day per developer. So, while we are not such a big software company, it’s still significant time and significant money especially considering the aggressive timelines that we insist upon." - Vlad Khin, Software Architect at FJA-US
Computer Services, Insurance
FJA-US is a software development consulting firm providing software to the insurance industry. The company is a subsidiary of COR&FJA Group based in Stuttgart, Germany with 1,200 employees in 22 countries worldwide.
FJA-US developers were have difficulties predicting whether their web services will perform in their customers’ WebSphere environments because they do not have WebSphere Application Server on their machines. However, the full versions of WebSphere Application server are too big for the desktops and laptops.
FJA-US took advantage of the opportunity to try a Beta version of IBM WebSphere Application Server 8.5 Liberty Profile. The Liberty Profile is optimized for developer productivity and web/mobile application deployment. Its restart time is under five seconds, and with its small footprint and ease of use, the Liberty Profile is designed for developers building applications that do not require the full Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) environment of traditional enterprise application server profiles.
· Projected 20 percent reduction in development time and costs · Ability to develop in same environment as target environment · Less than 15-minute installation time
Vlad Khin, Software Architect at FJA-US
FJA-US is a subsidiary of a large European company. It has presence in about 22 countries, total staff about 1200 people and mostly we develop software for insurance industry, life insurance, health.
The architecture we are dealing with now, we are trying to work on now is mostly built around web services.
We have proprietary solution which allows speed up time to market significantly. And I am talking about something that is called project machine which is a product management tool, product development and management tool.
We completely removed dependency on the front-end from the back-end from the services. Front-end can be developed by us, by client in the house whereas our offering is services that integrate a proprietary solution and thus we allow flexibility for customers not to buy the whole thing.
I had the opportunity to work with a beta version of Liberty Profile and I am quite excited about it, frankly.
I am most excited about the size of the software, the small footprint. I am most excited about the fact that I was able to download, install and have it running and integrated with my Eclipse environment under 15 minutes.
Liberty Profile, once it is installed in a developer’s workstation, will potentially save, let say,an hour -- maybe more than that -- a day per developer. So, while we are not such a big software company, it’s still significant time and significant money especially considering the aggressive timelines that we insist upon.
The Liberty Profile once it is used completely by development team, by continuous integration, by automated testing, by potentially load testing, will reduce time, if I am bold enough to estimate, by 20%. I would say that Liberty Profile is a really good choice for small, medium, large software companies with multiple locations if they target or when they target WebSphere deployment.
Yes, I had the opportunity to work with beta version of Liberty Profile and I am quite excited about it frankly.
