Overview

When Cincom Systems (Cincom) started up in 1968, there was no software industry. In its 44 years, the company has developed dozens of software products, among them Cincom Synchrony, a contact center and unified desktop solution that guides smarter interactions with customers and improves operational efficiency. Today Cincom’s 700 employees, located in 16 countries worldwide, are preparing for the next trend in software development: mobile applications.

Business need:
Cincom’s Synchrony engineers develop using open source and deploy on licensed software. This can cause inconsistencies between the user experience in the development environment and the customer experience.

Solution:
Cincom engineers develop using open source and deploy on licensed software, which can cause inconsistencies between the user experience in development and the customer experience. Using IBM® WebSphere® Application Server 8.5 Liberty Profile software, Cincom quickly corrects errors and reduces development cycles.

Benefits:
- Projected 20 percent reduction in development cycles and time to market - Fix errors and redeploy 60 times faster - Streamlined development of high-quality desktop and mobile applications

Raj Chacko, Technical Product Manager for Cincom Systems

Cincom was established in 1968. It's been in market for 44 years. We are a small company with 700 employees, over 23 offices across 16 countries.

For the last five years, the trend has been more towards the web application development front.

The next future is the mobile application development, and that’s where the market is going to be, whether it's health care or whatever sector it is, health care, energy, retail, doesn’t matter. So everything would be going that mobile platforms.

So the challenges are how do you not only that you develop a product but also how do you maintain the lifecycle of the product.

These days, people and consumers are expecting quick fixes. Not only are they expecting great products, the level of expectations has gone so high that they don’t not only do they expect quality products, they also expect the quick updates and fix to be done quickly.

I think one of the good things that IBMers did was they tried to focus on what would make the first impression. The first impression of any open source product is the quickness of installing, and I think one of the primary things that we as a developer when we downloaded the Liberty Profile, the first coolest thing was that you can drag and drop it onto the ECLIPSE environment. It worked out of the box straightaway.

So the next thing that we did was once we had installed it, we were excited, and we said, Okay, let’s go to the next step of deploying it, and let’s see is it really small footprint.

We deployed it, and surprisingly, the memory footprint was really what IBM said, really lightweight. It came up as was said. So it worked out pretty good.

With Liberty Profile, what we found was because of its dynamic nature of saving and trying to redeploy it quickly, it took us like under what seven seconds for me when I was trying to develop, which is like next to nothing.

So at a minimum 20% of the development time would be we can all expect that there would be a speed up of 20% of development time.

The duration of worklight on top of Liberty Profile, the development time would further be decreased down so that you can have support for multiple apps for IOS and your android telephones. It gives you additional framework to develop all your mobile application and maintain it in one area. You need a framework. Worklight has got a framework that allows you to maintain applications that can be supported multiple smart devices. This is where we want to take our application to.

Once we have this consistent development platform, what will happen is right from development platform to the deployment platform, the consistency is there. What we are expecting is all those level one issue that we see, the issues which are not of very high severity that shouldn’t have been there, would go away, and it would make the customers more happy.

And it would be a big factor for us when we go ahead and tell to our customers that, you know what, we are not only deploying things in an environment that you have, but we have also developed our product in that kind of environment. So it's a very positive message to the customers.
