Case Study

With more than 125,000 people in 44 countries, Capgemini is one of the world's foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services. The group reported 2012 global revenues of EUR10.3 billion. Together with its customers, Capgemini creates and delivers business and technology solutions that fit their needs and drive the results they want. A deeply multicultural organization, Capgemini has developed its own way of working, the Collaborative Business Experience, and draws on Rightshore, its worldwide delivery model.

The Capgemini Accelerated Delivery Center (ADC) in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is one of a group of more than 20 state-of-the-art product-delivery facilities in 13 countries. In these specialized development environments, Capgemini assists customers with the methodologies and technologies necessary for designing, developing and implementing software solutions.

Supporting a growing shift to agile development

Capgemini is facing a changing world in which its customers increasingly seek to adopt agile development methodology. To keep up with this change, Capgemini needed to adapt its processes and technology. The Capgemini ADC in the Netherlands wanted to create a platform that would increase collaboration, traceability and transparency throughout project development lifecycles by establishing a more predictable and repeatable approach to agile development. The center sought a solution that included strongly defined processes that incorporated set guidelines, templates, checklists, preferred practices and flexibility. The ADC also needed the solution to comply with its quality-control standards and Maturity Level 3 of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) process-improvement approach. Finally, the business wanted a solution that could run in the Capgemini Rightshore global-delivery-model environment.

Creating a flexible platform using IBM Rational Jazz technology

To address its needs, the Capgemini ADC worked with IBM Software Services for Rational, implementing the IBM Rational Jazz platform along with IBM Rational Quality Manager, IBM Rational Requirements Composer, IBM Rational Software Architect and IBM Rational Team Concert™ software. “With the combination and integration of project planning, support for distributed teams, a rich development environment, full traceability of all project artifacts and proper maintainability of the application, Jazz demonstrates its added value,” says Ad Smeets, project and service manager, ADC, Capgemini.

Using the applications, Capgemini can create models and deployment frameworks as efficient and repeatable methodologies for agile software development projects. As the foundation of the platform, the Capgemini ADC uses Rational Team Concert software’s configuration management and version control features, as well as its standardized templates. Further, the center uses Rational Software Architect software to support high-quality IT architectures, increase system flexibility and manage solution quality and risks. Capgemini implemented Rational Quality Manager software to manage product testing and quality and to support enhanced collaboration and productivity capabilities. To further support collaboration and seamless information sharing, the center uses Rational Requirements Composer software to define and manage product requirements during development.

The platform, which distributed and nondistributed teams can use, provides the capabilities that help ensure that:
● Project teams can use established templates and standards to get up and running quickly
● The technology used for each project aligns with projects needs
● Teams can use best practices to improve existing processes

Increasing speed to market by 25 percent

By implementing the Rational Jazz platform and its software components, the Capgemini ADC in Utrecht gained a comprehensive, collaborative lifecycle-management solution that increases its ability to support customers’ changing needs, ensure product consistency and more easily share designs and product information.

For example, one key project executed using the new platform reduced operating and ownership costs by 25 percent and increased overall productivity, speed to market and overall product quality by 25 percent.

The Capgemini ADC team also demonstrated that the platform can help other projects by:
● Improving transparency and predictability by estimating in a standardized way and by continuous monitoring and reporting
● Mitigating risks as a result of industrialized project measurement analysis and quality assurance processes according to CMMI
● Reducing complexity and decrease project startup time by provisioning a standardized infrastructure and platform
● Increasing productivity and cost-effectiveness by taking care of the project environment, allowing projects to focus on their deliverables
● Improving collaboration by integrating Capgemini teams and customer teams, using a one-team approach

Overall, the new platform drives significant innovation in the way the ADC delivers services.
