Case Study

IBM Software Services for WebSphere migrates company workflows to IBM WebSphere software

This company in the United States provides insurance products and health plan coverage to more than two million people across Tennessee and five million beneficiaries nationwide.

Challenge
New requirements established by the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010 have considerably altered the business landscape for the insurance industry. As part of the drive to ensure ongoing compliance with changing healthcare mandates while operating in an unrelentingly competitive environment, health plans and other health insurers or “payers” are working to optimize massive workflows and modernize the IT systems that support them.

Within this company, those workflows relate to enrolment processes for millions of customers and members. The company’s modernization initiative and its move toward a service-oriented architecture (SOA) required migration from its existing workflow technology platform, in place since 2000, to IBM WebSphere® Process Server software.

Solution
The company teamed with the IBM Software Service for WebSphere (ISSW) group to migrate from one platform to the other. ISSW provided the needed expertise on both platforms and worked with the company’s team to relocate the workflows with no downtime.

WebSphere Process Server software operates in conjunction with other WebSphere components, such as IBM WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus, in the SOA platform. This new infrastructure supports the company’s efforts to be more process-driven in its approach to integrated health management, consumer-directed healthcare and the anticipated impact of healthcare reform legislation and regulatory requirements by enabling automated process
modeling and management.

Benefits
• Increases workflow processing capabilities in support of integrated health management and legislative mandated initiatives
• Reduces time to value and increases efficiency by teaming with IBM Software Services for WebSphere
• Eliminates downtime during workflow migration to WebSphere Process Server software
