Overview

With over 10,000 employees, GFI Software is a major European player in the domain of IT added-value services. GFI is also a publisher and distributor of software packages, including related consulting services. For more than 15 years, the “RAD Race” application development contest in Belgium has become a legendary test of software developers’ skills, garnering press coverage in major magazines in Belgium and the Netherlands. GFI set out to prove that the 2010 contest could be won using the IBM® Lotus Notes® and IBM Domino® rapid application development environment.

Business need:
The challenge is to build a complete, ready-to-use web application in only 12 hours with a team of only two developers. The specific application to be built in 2010 had to enable a secretary from a local football company to organize an event that people could register for online, and the application had to provide support for selectable event variables such as duration of attendance, number of attendees and preordering of meals. In addition to creating a form with data tables and customer entry fields, they had to add an invoicing system that could perform calculations.

Solution:
With the freedom to choose any development tools, GFI’s two-person team used IBM Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino and Lotus Domino Designer to build a successful Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) web application that won the Silver prize at the RAD Race. IBM Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino software deliver a highly scalable and customizable collaborative business application environment supported on a wide range of platforms.

Benefits:
- GFI was able to build a complete, ready-to-use SaaS application that represented a first-of-a-kind development achievement in just 12 hours, thanks to Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino and Lotus Domino Designer - GFI’s participation and Silver award status in the RAD Race generated local Benelux press coverage, which enhances the company’s standing as a key developer and systems integrator in the EU market, and adds depth to sales presentations and meetings with customers

Case Study

With over 10,000 employees, GFI Software is a major European player in the domain of IT added-value services. GFI is also a publisher and distributor of software packages, including related consulting services.

Challenge
For more than 15 years, the “RAD Race” application development contest in Belgium has become a legendary test of software developers’ skills, garnering press coverage in major magazines in Belgium and the Netherlands. GFI set out to prove that the 2010 contest could be won using the IBM® Lotus Notes® and IBM Domino® rapid application development environment.

The challenge is always to build a complete, ready-to-use web application in only 12 hours with a team of only two developers. The specific application to be built in 2010 had to enable a secretary from a local football company to organize an event that people could register for online, and the application had to provide support for selectable event variables such as duration of attendance, number of attendees and preordering of meals. In addition to creating a form with data tables and customer entry fields, a further complication was the need to add an invoicing system to the application that could perform calculations.

Solution
With the freedom to choose any development tools, GFI’s two-person team used IBM Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino and Lotus Domino Designer to build a successful Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) web application that won the Silver prize at the RAD Race. IBM Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino software deliver a highly scalable and customizable collaborative business application environment supported on a wide range of platforms.

GFI teamed a Lotus Notes client developer with a web developer, with the main interface being built for the Lotus Notes client. Lotus Notes and Domino offer pre-built architecture and built-in security, and Lotus Domino has the advantage of being a rapid application development environment. Together they provide a platform for developing highly secure applications that deliver complex workflow services—functionality often missing in other development tools. Lotus Domino Designer is the development tool used to build applications that run on Lotus Domino (with web or mobile access) and on Lotus Notes, and was deemed by the team to allow more creativity than more common tools like Microsoft® .NET. The speed of development is primarily attained by the fact that all the data and all the programming are in one database, so there is no need to switch between different environments.

Creating the web interface was accomplished by making a set of classes with the SaaS application, using preprepared classes of LotusScript®, and the whole application was built on the principle of “separation of layers.”

Benefits
- GFI was able to build a complete, ready-to-use SaaS application that represented a first-of-a-kind development achievement in just 12 hours, thanks to Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino and Lotus Domino Designer
- GFI’s participation and Silver award status in the RAD Race generated local Benelux press coverage, which enhances the company’s standing as a key developer and systems integrator in the EU market, and adds depth to sales presentations and meetings with customers
