Case Study

By allowing physical and electronic information carriers to be used side by side, this global provider of mailroom, document process and office support outsourcing solutions aims to simplify communication between customers and their audiences—whether in the form of physical documents for solicitation and retention, electronic solutions or comprehensive consulting tools for customer management.

The company works with the latest IT platforms, optimizing and incorporating processes and thus enhancing efficiency for its customers. Along the value chain of a document, the provider offers a wide range of services and solutions: mailroom, document processing, archiving, electronic signature, secure mail and electronic post box, as well as mailings, document output, billing and payment, e-commerce and customer retention programs, and more.

Test management critical to customer satisfaction
The company relies heavily on efficient workflow systems that work without error consistently for each and every client. One way in which the postal solutions provider manages the testing of its systems is the use of professional test software tools, which help organizations to plan, execute and monitor efficient and cost-effective test projects prior to an application going live.

To gain global lifecycle software delivery efficiencies, the company decided to switch its test management platform to IBM Rational Quality Manager software, which provides a centralized, collaborative test management hub to coordinate quality assurance plans, processes and resources.

Sogeti prepares provider for success
To ensure that the migration to Rational Quality Manager was a smooth transition, the provider engaged IBM Business Partner Sogeti to manage the migration of existing legacy test assets to IBM Rational Quality Manager V2.0. Sogeti had developed a unique migration mapping and execution service for clients, providing the framework and process for transferring current testware for manual test execution from existing testing tools to IBM Rational Quality Manager.

In discussions with the client, it was decided that the migration would be carried out as a “big bang” implementation, based on two test runs and a final “go-live” run, rather than a more evolutionary, incremental approach. The scope for the migration included the entire HP Quality Center testware, including all test plans, test cases, test scripts and defects. With 725 test plans, 1,156 test cases, 4,916 design steps and 1,863 defects, the planned migration needed to be both flexible and robust. The migration was carried out on a completely new IBM environment, and the postal solutions provider is now using IBM Rational Quality Manager as the basis for its quality assurance process.

Rational Quality Manager delivers end-to-end testing improvements
The client has successfully migrated the test assets for all areas of the business. The adoption of Rational Quality Manager has helped the company realize:

· Improved collaboration, user-friendliness and availability for testing processes
· Improved transparency and traceability, allowing for optimized processes and workflow
· Successful migration without any degradation of test assets or impact on business processes, allowing the company to continue delivering uncompromised information to clients
· A complete migration to a comprehensive and collaborative test management environment within a short timeframe and tight budget

Executing the migration together with Sogeti has also saved the postal solutions provider the expense and time involved in developing the technical expertise to perform a complex data migration. The head of quality service and test management at the company comments: “Sogeti has worked with a clear focus on the planned targets and has brought its experience to help us monitor and control the ongoing process. As a result we have been able to focus our resources on the formal and organizational migration. Therefore, the activities of everyone involved have been perfectly matched.”
