"The powerful data collection, integration and transformation capabilities provided by IBM software combined with TCS solutions made this extraordinary technological achievement possible." - Dr. Satheesh C. Shenoi, Director, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services
Customer:
Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS)
Industry:
Government
Deployment country:
India
Solution:
Smarter Planet
Smarter Planet:
Smarter Government, Smarter Public Safety
Overview
Located in Hyderabad, India, the INCOIS performs oceanic research and offers advisory services to scientific, governmental and commercial organizations. As an agency within the Indian government’s Ministry of Earth Sciences, INCOIS strives to enhance quality of life by enriching the oceanic knowledge base, improving weather and climate forecasts, and supporting the sustainable development of ocean ecosystems and coastal areas.
Business need:
An agency within the Indian government’s Ministry of Earth Sciences, INCOIS strives to enhance quality of life through ocean research and advisory services. To help mitigate the threat oceanic disasters pose to the nearly 400 million people populating the Indian Ocean’s coastal belt, INCOIS needed to develop a solution for detecting tsunamigenic earthquakes and issuing timely warnings to the public.
Solution:
Using IBM technology, INCOIS created a tsunami early warning system that processes real-time data from a network of seismic sensors and alerts Indian authorities to all tsunamigenic earthquake events. By forecasting the time at which an impending tsunami will occur, as well as its height and severity, the solution allows the Indian government to direct detailed warnings and instructions to the populations at risk.
Benefits:
Protects millions of lives by transforming real-time seismic data into actionable information and safety alerts; provides more than 25 countries in the Indian Ocean region with increased visibility into oceanic patterns and events
