Case Study
Challenge
A grocery retailer’s Computer Associates (CA) contract was due to renew in March 2008. However, the cost of renewal was steep. In addition, the retailer was planning on upgrading in October 2008 to IBM System z10 mainframes and would be faced with overwhelming upgrade fees for CA Endevor Software Change Manager. Faced with migrating off Endevor before the mainframe upgrade, the company sought an end-to-end change and configuration management solution that would allow staff to continue to work in a familiar development environment while defraying the high cost of upgrading its CA environment.
Solution
While the retailer assessed options including Serena ChangeMan ZMF, the company ultimately turned to IBM Rational software for a cost-effective, integrated change management solution. With the ability to deploy in a distributed environment, the retailer deployed both Rational ClearCase software configuration management and Rational ClearQuest change management software on the mainframe.
Rational ClearCase is used for both mainframe and distributed development and manages source code, change and configuration. Rational ClearQuest provides change tracking, process automation, reporting and lifecycle traceability for better visibility and control of the software development lifecycle.
To ensure success, IBM Rational Professional Services custom consulting and mentoring services helped the retailer configure Rational ClearCase to meet the needs of the company’s development environment. IBM Rational Professional Services also supplied deployment services to help the company transition from
CA Endevor to its new Rational environment.
