Overview

Healthways uses .NET and Java technologies to help 27 million members achieve their best health by providing proactive Health and Care SupportSM programs for individuals at each phase of life.

Business need:
After spending US$28 million in 2006 to print and mail literature to its members, Healthways needed to reduce paper and postage costs while growing its recipient base. With a self-service portal, the company could provide an alternative to costly paper-based processes and offer around-the-clock, Web-based access to health and disease management documents.

Solution:
Healthways used Microsoft® .NET and Java™ skills and technologies to implement an eFulfillment Portal based on IBM WebSphere® Portal Enable software and the IBM Workplace Web Content Management™ application.

Benefits:
Healthways expects to achieve return on investment in less than a year due to dramatic reductions in printing and distribution costs; compatibility with familiar development tools allows Healthways to easily deliver a personalized experience to members in a highly scalable, “plug and play” environment; Workplace Web Content Management streamlines and simplifies document management, improving staff efficiency

Challenge

After spending US$28 million in 2006 to print and mail literature to its members, Healthways needed to reduce paper and postage costs while growing its recipient base. With a self-service portal, the company could provide an alternative to costly paper-based processes and offer around-the-clock, Web-based access to health and disease management documents.

Solution
Based on ease of development for its Microsoft® development team, scalability and total cost of ownership, Healthways chose IBM WebSphere Portal Enable, IBM Workplace Web Content Management and .NET Extensions for WebSphere Portal from Mainsoft Corporation as the foundation for its eFulfillment Portal.

Using IBM WebSphere Portal, the Healthways eFullfillment Portal integrates more than 1TB of patient data as well as a call center application. The portal aggregates customer requests for documents and schedules their eventual delivery.

Leveraging .NET Extensions for WebSphere Portal, the Healthways C# development team used familiar .NET development technologies to build a portal that quickly and easily modifies security and branding elements for each new customer. Ascendant Technology Java™ consultants architected the portal and built the Workplace Web Content Management system. With the technical assistance of Ascendant Technology, Healthways integrated Workplace Web Content Management with the portal, replacing the company’s manual document storage processes with a content management system that can automatically store documents and enables better management of the review process.

Benefits
• Healthways expects to achieve return on investment in less than a year due to dramatic reductions in printing and distribution costs.

• Compatibility with familiar development tools allows Healthways to easily deliver a personalized experience to members in a highly scalable, “plug and play” environment.

• Workplace Web Content Management streamlines and simplifies document management, improving staff efficiency.
