Smarter Planet:
Smarter Government, Smarter Public Safety
Overview
The Sheriff’s Office in Madison County, Mississippi, works with the community and its leaders to serve the citizens of Madison County. The agency provides a host of programs, including those devoted to neighborhood watch, personal safety and drug education.
Business need:
Because of Madison County’s rapid growth, the Sheriff’s Office needed a centralized and automated system that expedited data sharing and, at the same time, monitored and alerted employees to changing real-time conditions. It needed intelligence, planning and safety tools to plan and act preemptively.
Solution:
Now, for the first time, officers are connected—through notebook computers in their cars—with each other and to a centralized database at police headquarters. IBM Business Partner Diversified Computer Systems (DCS), Inc., developed a public safety solution, fully integrated with a county-owned IBM System i® server, on which all records of incidents, accidents, citations and warrants are stored and updated.
Benefits:
• Officers now receive critical, real-time information, which helps them make arrests and identify suspects and victims.
• Computer-aided dispatching gives deputies the ability to pinpoint the exact location of other officers at all times, if help is needed.
• Remote report writing allows deputies to stay on the streets, sustaining high visibility within the community, which discourages crime.
