Maximizing capabilities with minimal expense: The client obtains processing power on a pay-as-you-go basis, reducing hardware and software expenses while retaining capital for strategic investments.
Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, nViso SA is a privately held company associated with the Federal Institute of Technology, known as EPFL in Switzerland. The business develops technologies for deciphering emotions by interpreting human facial expressions and eye movements. The company capitalized on advancements in machine learning, video processing and mathematical modeling and then combined them with high levels of expertise in computer science, engineering and behavioral sciences to engineer its emotion recognition technology platform. Using dynamic 3-D facial expression recognition technology, nViso software services provide an analysis of consumer emotions, including the reporting and visualization of emotional responses such as anger, disgust, fear, happiness and surprise. The company is dedicated to harnessing the power of emotion thus allowing nViso customers to analyze and understand the effect of emotions in human behavior and decision making.
Recognizing the need for powerful processing
The business provides an emotional research solution; analysis and consumer-emotion consulting services; and a Software as a Service (SaaS)-based system that provides direct access to emotion data and online reporting. To deliver this variety of services, the nViso Emotion Video Analytics solution uses an electronic virtual mask that is superimposed over research participants’ video images. The virtual mask provides 3-D imaging capabilities that capture data to measure changes and reactions in 143 points on the human face. The research participants’ instantaneous reactions are studied on a second-by-second basis. The nViso analytics tool systematically aggregates, analyzes and interprets the data for its customers. The emotion-based measurements, integral to the SaaS solution, required extensive high-performance computing capabilities. The privately held organization needed a flexible, scalable computing platform to process its massive data stores and deliver its solution to customers without a huge investment in a hosted IT infrastructure environment. As it searched for cost-effective options, nViso explored cloud computing.
Securing high-powered, low-cost resources
As part of its thorough investigation, nViso approached IBM through the IBM Global Entrepreneur program. The company discovered that the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise solution offered an agile cloud computing environment designed to provide rapid access to security-rich, enterprise-class virtual server environments. The Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) was well-suited for its development and test activities as well as the collection and delivery of its data-intensive analyses. The SmartCloud Enterprise platform also provides additional cloud-based services, systems and software analytics tools such as the IBM SPSS® application to meet the needs of the organization’s evolving technology and expanding customer base. By using SmartCloud Enterprise capabilities, nViso made its Emotion Video Analytics solution available to customers located in three geographic regions: North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
