Smarter Planet:
Smarter Government
Overview
The Institute for Information Industry (III) is the government agency dedicated to supporting the development of the IT industry in Taiwan. It has six research and development (R&D) laboratories, which are focused on information systems, network and communications, multimedia technologies, embedded systems and e-commerce.
Business need:
Engaged to provide the IT infrastructure for a genetic database project, the Institute for Information Industry (III) encountered a number of problems. The project requirements were neither clear nor determined, and a government regulation regarding privacy and genetic information had yet to be finalized. III sought a scalable IT system with the flexibility to meet its current and future needs.
Solution:
IBM Business Partner Tung-I Information Service Co. implemented the IBM Life Sciences Clinical Genomics Solution, an integrated architecture that facilitates the identification and understanding of the molecular basis of disease.
Benefits:
Provides the flexibility and extendability needed to adapt to evolving user and expansion requirements; reduces development time by approximately 40 percent; delivers the first and second phases of the genetic database project within a tight timeframe

Challenge
Engaged to provide the IT infrastructure for a genetic database project, the Institute for Information Industry (III) encountered a number of problems. The project requirements were neither clear nor determined, and a government regulation regarding privacy and genetic information had yet to be finalized. III sought a scalable IT system with the flexibility to meet its current and future needs.
Solution
IBM Business Partner Tung-I Information Service Co. implemented the IBM Life Sciences Clinical Genomics Solution, an integrated architecture that facilitates the identification and understanding of the molecular basis of disease. The genomics solution runs on a service-oriented architecture (SOA) environment supported by IBM WebSphere Process Server software and is hosted on IBM System p5 520Q Express – AIX® 5L Edition servers.
IBM DB2 Enterprise software provides a data repository for phenotype and genotype information, as well as data privacy and security technologies. IBM Tivoli® Access Manager for e-business software offers security-rich access control and single sign-on (SSO) support, and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition software acts as a data storage management platform.
Benefits
• Provides the flexibility and extendability needed to adapt to evolving user and expansion requirements
• Reduces development time by approximately 40 percent
• Delivers the first and second phases of the genetic database project within a tight timeframe
