Customer:
ARBURG

Industry:
Fabrication & Assembly

Deployment country:
Germany

Solution:
Business Continuity, Energy Efficiency, Enterprise Modernization, Smarter Computing, Workload Optimized Infrastructure Framework, System z Software

Overview

ARBURG is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of injection molding machines located in Lossburg, Germany.

Business need:
ARBURG wanted to drive down operational costs for their core IT Services. It was very expensive to develop new business functions in its previous environment.

Solution:
ARBURG selected the IBM zEnterprise System (IBM zEnterprise 114) for scalability, reliability and availability, along with IBM System Storage DS8800 and FlashCopy for business continuity. SAP software provided the applications and implementing tools such as IBM Optim Performance Manager ARBURG can analyze SAP transactions proactively and do real end-to-end monitoring.

Benefits:
By running SAP on zEnterprise, Arburg reduced energy consumption by 80%, created 25% in energy savings for storage, and realized nearly 30% improvement across core processes. With IBM, Arburg can reinvest its savings in innovative technologies and new solutions for its customers. According to IT Director Andreas Duemmler, IBM DB2 and SAP on z infrastructure “helped us in our philosophy to be faster, smarter, cheaper and more secure.”

Andreas Duemmler: ARBURG is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of injection molding machines.

The entire range of our products is manufactured here at our factory in Lossburg and we produce about 60% of our parts ourselves.

Our business has expanded over the last years. Nevertheless, the markets have changed; markets are going faster. There are overarching topics like production efficiency and energy efficiencies. And we have to help our customers that they can produce their parts at minimum costs.

Stefan Ridinger: It was very expensive to develop new business functions in this old environment.

Andreas Duemmler: We could not so easily adapt our business processes. So we had to decide to change this application platform.

Stefan Ridinger: We came to that decision because we realized that we had to respond much faster to changes in our business processes.

The solution should reduce our work in order to invest more time in innovations and do not waste time in administration and maintenance.

Andreas Duemmler: The infrastructure must have the possibility to be capable to be available the whole time, to be reliable, could be scalable and it should fit directly to our application infrastructure.

Andreas Duemmler: We need the best applications, which are available, and for the best applications we need also the best infrastructure. So we decided long ago to work with IBM in the infrastructure and with SAP in the application environment.

Having two workloads on one machine and do the migration on one machine, this is an ideal solution for ARBURG to do this with zEnterprise.

We have five core processes: development, procurement, manufacture, sales and service. And we can see in some of these processes that we could reduce our cycle times so the processes were running much better.

With our new infrastructure, we reached about 20% of improvement in the total cost of ownership.

The money which we saved, we reinvest in our processes, in new solutions, in new technologies, all that we can be faster for our requirements from our internal customers and also to accelerate our time to market.

Stefan Ridinger: In the past, we had to back up our database more than two hours. That was too long for us. So with the new solution with the FlashCopy, we now can back up our database within seconds.

We implemented tools such as IBM Optim Performance Manager so now we can analyze SAP transactions proactively and do real end-to-end monitoring. This helped us to improve the performance of our SAP system.

Andreas Duemmler: The z infrastructure with IBM DB2 and with SAP helped us in our philosophy to be faster, smarter, cheaper and more secure.

We have been in a long time relationship with SAP and IBM and they always could give us the right solutions, which we need for our business. So we are working close together to improve this and to optimize this. And what we implemented here, this was an ideal platform for us and we would do this again.
