"We use IBM SPSS Statistics to examine survey outcomes for almost all theses. Our PhD students and academic researchers also publish work in areas such as sustainable development, supported by the outcomes of surveys conducted among business leaders, and those outcomes are analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics. It has to be said that the software’s interactive user guide and up to 6,000 help pages make it much easier for beginners and non-specialists to get to grips with the software!" - Jean-Louis Chandon, Professor at the Aix-en-Provence IAE and CERGAM Director
The Institut d’Administration des Entreprises (IAE) in Aix-en-Provence is part of the Université Paul Cézanne Aix-Marseille and the 29 other member universities of the IAE network. Created in 1955, this is one of the oldest management schools in the French university system.
A teaching tool for statistics courses and a research tool for strategy, HR, finance and marketing applications.
IAE lecturers, students and researchers all use IBM® SPSS® Statistics to analyze survey results. The university also uses the IBM SPSS Exact Tests, IBM SPSS Missing Values, IBM SPSS Advanced Statistics, IBM SPSS Regression and IBM SPSS Categories modules for analyzing correlations.
Ease of use and rapid adoption thanks to the interactive user guide.

The Institut d’Administration des Entreprises (IAE) in Aix-en-Provence is part of the Université Paul Cézanne Aix-Marseille and the 29 other member universities of the IAE network. Created in 1955, this is one of the oldest management schools in the French university system, and the only university institution to hold twin accreditation under the European EQUIS (since 1999) and international AMBA (Association of MBAs) systems for its MBA (Master of Business Administration) Change & Innovation, Executive Part-time MBA and EuroMBA courses.
Within this structure, the Management Studies and Research Center (Centre d’Études et de Recherche en Gestion or CERGAM) at the Université d’Aix-Marseille is home to two Management Sciences research laboratories: the CEROG (IAE Aix-en-Provence, Université Paul Cézanne) and the GREFI (Faculty of Applied Economics). The CERGAM is ranked 41 amongst the world’s top management schools by the Financial Times, the prestigious U.K. financial daily. Approximately 80 students work on their theses here, and benefit from the infrastructure offered by France’s third-largest university based Management research center.
The decision to adopt IBM SPSS Statistics as its educational and research solution “was made 15 years ago in agreement with my colleagues,” recalls Jean-Louis Chandon, Professor at the Aix-en-Provence IAE and CERGAM Director. “More than half of the students taking our Masters degree and three MBA programs are involved in statistics courses using IBM SPSS Statistics (research and statistics methodology).” On the research side, IBM SPSS Statistics is used by academics working in Strategy, Human Resources and Finance. For example, marketing researchers here conduct advanced research into customer satisfaction, market segmentation and measurement scale creation.
“We use IBM SPSS Statistics to examine survey outcomes for almost all theses,” states Chandon. “Our PhD students and academic researchers also publish work in areas such as sustainable development, supported by the outcomes of surveys conducted among business leaders, and those outcomes are analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics. It has to be said that the software’s interactive user guide and up to 6,000 help pages make it much easier for beginners and non-specialists to get to grips with the software!”
In this way, the university uses the basic IBM SPSS Statistics modules, as well as IBM SPSS Exact Tests, IBM SPSS Missing Values, IBM SPSS Advanced Statistics, IBM SPSS Regression and IBM SPSS Categories, with the emphasis on analyzing correlations. What’s more, “When one of our professors is called in by a company as a consultant, he or she may need to use datamining or file merging,” explains Chandon.
This long-term collaboration between IBM SPSS account management and the Université d’Aix-en-Provence has created a very close relationship between the partners. “Under the IBM SPSS research support policy, we pay a special university price under a win-win arrangement that benefits both of us,” acknowledges Chandon. “As members of the user group, we often attend training meetings and ‘roadshows,’ and we can rely on IBM SPSS engineers to provide presentations on the most advanced aspects of the software as part of our courses. Lastly, the CERGAM is also a beta tester for new IBM SPSS versions and solutions.” These are links that get stronger day by day.
