Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM

Technical detail

Compression and Encryption Support

IBM Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM provides exit points during both backup and restore processing to allow customers to review and/or modify the data being backed up or restored.  This can include functions like data compression and data encryption.

For data compression, IBM includes two sample routines in Backup and Restore Manager for z/VM:

  • BKREXT2A SAMPASM - a sample exit routine, provided in source form, that performs run-length encoding compression of backup data. This is example is provided to demonstrate how to construct a compression and decompression exit.  It is not suitable for production use.
  • BKREXT3A TEXT - a ready to use, supported exit routine, provided in object (TEXT) form, that calls CMS Compression Services to compress backup data, and decompress restore data.

For data encryption, customers can provide their own routines, using the exit points provided, to perform data encryption during backup and data decryption during restore operations.  Customers can also use routines provided by vendors, such as V/Soft Software's Encrypt/Backup.
