Enterprise Modernization Strategies in a Stressed Economic Environment

Scott Searle Most organizations wrestle with how to optimize multiple generations of technology to support mission-critical operations. As technology cycles accelerate, IT managers must address the question of what to do with legacy systems. These are assets that are either aging or for which internal technical expertise may be waning.

In this BizTech Reports podcast, IBM’s Scott Searle, program director for Enterprise Modernization, helps us understand how this issue can be addressed in a systematic and cost-effective manner, particularly now, when people are forced to do more with less (US).

Listen to Searle explain how enterprise modernization is not just about working with decades-old mainframe systems. He includes ANY technology for which support and expertise has elapsed or become lost in the clutter and complexity of today's hybrid enterprise computing environment. This may include Java applications or other web-enabled programming that is operating in a vacuum.

The objective of an enterprise modernization strategy is to rapidly inventory all assets, identify the utility of all key codes, and then develop an accessible library that allows IT managers to re-use assets in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner.

Searle talks about how an effective enterprise modernization (US) initiative can reduce the amount of time and money organizations invest in maintenance activities. Then, IT managers can allocate more resources to new development projects that exploit new opportunities or differentiate the organization from competitors. That’s doing more with less.
