IBM Installation Manager FAQ

IBM Installation Manager is an application that makes it easier for you to download and install trial code for many IBM software products. Installation Manager simplifies trial code installation and, once installed, can be used to update the software that you have previously installed, and to install additional software.

Why should I use Installation Manager rather than just downloading the trial code?
Installation Manager is a single download that simplifies the process of downloading new trial code, and updating installed trial code. The user interface allows you to select the pieces of the download you want and installs them in one installation step.

Selecting features sounds pretty complicated, is it difficult?
No, the Installation Manager is a GUI-based, easy-to-use application that walks you through the configuration and installation of the trial software packages you choose to install.

What are the system requirements?
The same requirements as the software trials being installed.

How long does it take to download and install Installation Manager?
The Installation Manager is 70 MB and can take as little as a few minutes to download and install if you're using a high-speed Internet connection.

Do I still need to unzip each of the electronic software distribution (ESD) files?
No, once it's installed, Installation Manager will install the equivalent of a multi-CD package without manual intervention.

Will the amount of data transported by the Installation Manager be more or less then if I do the manual steps myself?
There will most likely be quite a bit less data transmitted to complete the installation of the desired package. It is possible to further cut back the download size by not selecting unneeded features.

Does the Installation Manager download the ESD files?
No the Installation Manager installs the exact set of components required to support the feature set that you select.

The ESD files have md5 hashes to make sure they are not corrupted in transit. Will it be unreliable to download this new way?
No, each of the components will be verified automatically by the Installation Manager against the md5 hash kept on the server.

How does the initial setup and installation work?
Most users will simply hit the "next" button until the package that they desire is installed and executing on their computer.

What can I download using Installation Manager?
The Rational Desktop and Construction tools as well as the Rational Performance and Test tools have been packaged to be installed using the Installation Manager. During the prototype phase of the IBM Repository Server a few of these tools will be available for download with more and more of them coming on line over the next few months.

What is the IBM Repository Server?
This is the online application that stores the packages that you can install.

What is the login prompt displayed by the Installation Manager asking for?
This is the same IBM Internet password that you use to access other IBM sites, including IBM support, developerWorks, and alphaWorks.

Why do I have to login again after I just logged in using the Web browser to start the download of the Installation Manager?
Your Web browser is logged on, but the Installation Manager is not logged in. In order to access the trial downloads, you need be authenticated with your browser and with Installation Manager.

Do I have to install it every time I want to download trial software?
No, on Windows use Start> IBM Installation Manager > IBM Installation Manager program to start the Installation Manager. Click "Install Packages" to install all of the software that has been enabled for download using this new technology.

I already have the Installation Manager installed because I've purchased and installed an IBM product that uses it. Do I have to download it again?
No, in the Installation Manager select File > Preferences > Repositories and add the repository http:\\www.ibm.com\... to see the available trial downloads.

The firewall complains that java.exe is attempting to access the Internet.
Installation Manager is a Java™ program. In order to use Installation Manager, verify that this program is indeed the Installation Manager application and allow it to access the Internet.

My company does not allow programs that access the Internet due to security concerns.
The Installation Manager is not an Internet download mechanism that you can use. Use the traditional method of downloading the ESD images, unzipping and then performing the installation (the Installation Manager will still be used to install the products but it will access the unzipped contents already on your local disk instead of accessing the network).
