A Fixed Term License (FTL) is granted for a specific length of time (term). When the license expires at the end of the term, the user must either stop using the product or obtain a new license. IBM Rational only offers Authorized User Fixed Term Licenses at this time.
What is an Authorized User FTL?
An Authorized User FTL allows a single, specific individual to use an IBM Rational product for a specific length of time (the term). Purchasers must obtain an Authorized User FTL for each individual user accessing the product in any manner. An Authorized User FTL may not be reassigned unless the purchaser is replacing the original assignee on a long-term or permanent basis.
What are the differences between a regular Authorized User license and an Authorized User FTL?
There are three main differences:
The Authorized User license is a one-time, open-ended purchase that permits product use for an indefinite time period. The Authorized User FTL permits product use for only a fixed length of time (term); At the end of the term, the user no longer has the right to use the product.
The Authorized User FTL price does not vary depending on the Passport Advantage Relationship Suggested Volume Price (RSVP).
When you purchase an Authorized User FTL under the Passport Advantage Express program, IBM will automatically extend the term for an additional year at the prevailing price unless you notify IBM that you do not want an extension before the license expires. The subsequent FTL term starts when the initial FTL term expires. The price for this subsequent term is currently 80 percent of the initial FTL price but is subject to change.
Where can I find the FTL terms?
The FTL terms appear in an IBM Rational product license agreement that each user must click to accept before installing the product. The text is as follows:
Fixed Term License. If you acquire an IBM Rational program under a Fixed Term License (FTL), the following terms apply:
You may use the program only for a limited period of time, called the "fixed term." The end date of your fixed term will be specified in your Proof of Entitlement (PoE), under "Software Maintenance Coverage Dates."
At the end of the fixed term, your authorization to use the program will terminate; you must discontinue use of the program and destroy all copies of it.
If you wish to continue to use the program beyond the fixed term for an additional fee, contact IBM or your Rational reseller prior to the end date.
What is an initial FTL?
Your first FTL is your initial license, indicated in the product description as INITL 12MO FT LIC+SW MNT (Initial 12-month Fixed Term License and Software Maintenance). Your initial license will be used to calculate the terms of each subsequent FTL that you purchase.
What is a subsequent FTL?
A subsequent FTL is a renewal license that you purchase when your initial license term expires. Currently, subsequent FTLs are priced at 80 percent of the initial license cost, but that formula is subject to change. A subsequent FTL is indicated in the product description as SUBSQ 12MO FT LIC+SW MNT (Subsequent 12-month Fixed Term License and Software Maintenance).
Is software maintenance included with an FTL?
Yes. Holders of FTLs from IBM Rational automatically receive product upgrades and are entitled to technical support.
How do I notify IBM if I decide not to extend my FTL?
Before your FTL is scheduled to expire, you will receive a notice with detailed information on how to notify IBM that you do not want to extend your FTL. The notice will also remind you that IBM will extend your FTL automatically unless you send notification.
If I notify IBM that I do not want to extend my FTL, can I extend the license after it expires?
No. After the FTL expires, the user must acquire a new initial license.
