Summary of July 28, 2009 Announcement: IBM License Metric Tool V7.2

On July 28, 2009, IBM announced the availability of V7.2 of the IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT).  With this announcement [IBM Tivoli Asset Management for IT V7.2 provides a one-stop-shop to help drive IT cost effectiveness and audit readiness], IBM fulfilled earlier Statements of Direction made in Software Announcements 208-197, dated July 1, 2008, and Software Announcement 209-080, dated April 7, 2009.

28 July 2009 enhancements

IBM License Metric Tool V7.2* supports the following eligible virtualization technologies:

  • PowerVM Shared Dedicated Processor Partition for AIX V5.3, AIX V6.1, i5/OS V5R4, and IBM i 6.1
  • PowerVM Live Partition Mobility for both AIX V5.3 and V6.1
  • IBM AIX V6.1 Workload Partitions Manager™ (System WPAR)
  • AIX V6.1 Live Application Mobility
  • IBM i 5.4 (i5/OS V5R4) for Multiple Shared Pools
  • IBM i 6.1 (i5/OS® V6R1) OS for PowerVM™ LPAR, DLPAR, Single Shared Processor Pool, Micropartitioning and Multiple Shared Pools
  • VMware single server support for VMware ESX 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5
  • VMware cluster (with vCenter Server 2.0 and 2.5) support for VMware ESX 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5
  • VMware single server support for VMware Server 1.0
  • VMotion mobility functionality for VMware ESX 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5
  • VMware ESXi 3.5 including single server, cluster, and VMotion

* Tivoli Asset Discovery for Distributed V7.2 may be used in lieu of IBM License Metric Tool V7.2.

In addition, IBM announced that the following virtualization technologies were made eligible for sub-capacity licensing:

  • VMware cluster (with vCenter Server 4.0) support for VMware ESX 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5
  • VMware ESX 4.0 single server, cluster (with vCenter Server 4.0) and VMotion (mobility)
  • VMware ESXi 4.0 single server, cluster (with vCenter Server 4.0) and VMotion (mobility)


As previously announced in Software Announcement 209-080, dated April 7, 2009, IBM reconfirmed its plans to add IBM License Metric Tool support for the following eligible x86 virtualization technologies during the second half of 2010:

  • Citrix Xen Server 4.1 and 5.0 for single server, resource pool (a group of servers with resource pool master) and XenMotion (mobility)
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 and Windows® Server 2008 Hyper-V for single server, cluster, and Quick Migration (mobility)
  • VMware Server 2.0 (single server
  • Eligible BIOS settings and operating system commands for x86 servers that limit processor core resources

Also, during the second half of 2010, IBM plans to add IBM License Metric Tool support for the following virtualization technologies:

  • VMware cluster (with vCenter Server 4.0) support for VMware ESX 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5
  • VMware ESX 4.0 single server, cluster (with vCenter Server 4.0) and VMotion (mobility)
  • VMware ESXi 4.0 single server, cluster (with vCenter Server 4.0) and VMotion (mobility)

ELIGIBLE VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY & ELIGIBLE OPERATING SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY provides a complete list of eligible and supported virtualization technologies.

For eligible virtualization technologies not yet supported by the IBM License Metric Tool, customers are required to manually manage and track their Eligible Virtualization Environment, and manually prepare Audit Reports documenting the Virtualization Capacity by Eligible Sub-Capacity Product for your Eligible Virtualization Environment during each calendar or fiscal quarter.  For more information, go to Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules.
