9:00 a.m. - Understanding the Value of the Mainframe Today

zEnterprise is a "one of a kind" multi-architecture platform designed to increase data center operational efficiencies, optimize workload performance and reduce IT infrastructure costs - and all from a platform that delivers the lowest cost per workload. In this introductory module we’ll discusses a variety of strategies for achieving smarter computing with zEnterprise. We'll present the concepts of "fit for purpose", virtualization and consolidation, private cloud computing, and data optimization on zEnterprise, which will all be discussed in more detail in the follow-on track modules.

Products discussed/demo’ed: zEnterprise - z196, z114, zBX, zManager; z/OS, z/VM, Linux on z; IBM Smart Analytics System 9700 & IDAA, DB2, CICS, WebSphere

Competitors discussed: Oracle/Sun, HP, Microsoft

9:50 a.m. - Simplify and Compress Your Hardware Footprint With zEnterprise

In this module, we'll discuss in detail how zEnterprise - a centrally managed and fully virtualized platform - enables server consolidation at levels never before seen. We'll include data from real-world use case scenarios that shows how consolidating workloads on the zEnterprise platform can yield a lower cost per workload than up-grading to or consolidating on the competition platform.

Products discussed/demo’ed: z196, zManager, zBX blades & optimizers, z/VM, Linux on z, WebSphere Application Server, DataPower, DB2

Competitors discussed: Oracle/Sun, Microsoft

10:55 a.m. - System z - The Best Place For Business Analytics

A wealth of data exists that shows the mainframe platform is still the best for core transaction workloads and enterprise data processing. In the module we will delve into the advantages of zEnterprise as a platform for DB2 and data processing. We will look at how consolidating and co-locating data marts onto zEnterprise yields lower costs than the competition. We'll also show how zEnterprise coupled with the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator is the ideal platform on which to build a business intelligence and predictive analytics system for future growth and insights.

Products discussed/demo’ed: InfoSphere Information Server & Data Warehouse, DB2 for z/OS, Cognos 10, & SPSS; IBM Smart Analytics & IDAA; DS8800

Competitors discussed: Oracle/Sun

11:45 a.m. - System z Academic Initiative

The IBM Academic Initiative System z program seeks to ensure that the next generation of mainframe experts will be available to help more companies and organizations leverage the superior security, availability, scalability, and efficiency of the mainframe. The demand for IT skills is growing, especially for students who have mainframe or enterprise computing skills.

12:55 p.m. - Improving Service Delivery With Private Cloud Computing

Private cloud computing is a hot topic. Everyone is looking for a well-managed and all-inclusive platform where systems are heterogeneous yet elastic, workloads just run, services are seemingly automatically met, and overall IT labor costs are dramatically reduced. In this module, we’ll examine how a private cloud computing platform built on zEnterprise is designed with flexible service delivery to include unique support for virtualization, automation and standardization.

Products discussed/demo’ed: zBX & zManager; Tivoli Provisioning Manager, Monitoring, Service Automation Manager (TSAM), & Usage and Account Manager; IBM Workload Deployer, WebSphere Application Server

Competitors discussed: Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure

2:00 p.m. - TCO Lessons Learned From Customer Engagements

Have you heard of the IBM Eagle team? (Hint: They have saved customers millions of dollars!) Do you know about their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) studies? (Hint: They are free of charge!) Join us for this eye-opening session on the lessons learned from our customers in typical TCO studies. We will highlight the ways that mainframe customers can optimize their current costs, and provide key differences for comparing the cost of different platforms. We will also briefly cover what is involved in a typical study.

2:50 p.m. - Developing Hybrid Applications for zEnterprise

Learn how the Rational software delivery tools modernize mainframe application development and make it easier. Developers new to System z can become productive immediately without having to learn older, different paradigms. Multi-tier applications can now be easily developed with an integrated framework and management system for deployment on a zEnterprise. Find out how developers can share a single, consistent graphical user interface for all software development; and watch a cross-platform end-to-end debugging session that seamlessly traverses JavaTM and COBOL code in a single debugging session.
