Our complimentary full-day seminar will introduce you to the features and the benefits of upgrading to DB2 9 for z/OS – from business value to installation tips and tuning.
9:00am - DB2 for z/OS: Business value and DB2 9 and beyond
This session will recap the key new features of DB2® 9 for z/OS®, followed by a look at DB2 X, the next release of DB2, and other new technologies that are being developed for future releases of DB2 for z/OS. Special focus will be given to technical advances that can assist in managing data privacy, security, regulatory compliance, and porting SQL across multiple platforms. We will also review the scalability, availability and performance improvements that are expected in such a major product upgrade.
10:30am - DB2 performance highlights
Tuning DB2 applications for optimal DB2 performance does not need to be a complex exercise. Most performance problems can be easily solved once you have connected the problem symptom with its underlying causes. In this session we’ll recommend a simple methodology to solve these performance challenges. You’ll learn about system-level performance topics including catalog migration from V8 to DB2 9, utility performance enhancement, index compression, hardware and software synergy, and virtual storage constraint relief. We’ll look at the SQL performance enhancement in DB2 9, including enhancements in access path selection, prefetch and deferred write and preformat, sort, variable-length record, and more.
11:30am - Planning your DB2 migration – part I
This presentation discusses migrating to DB2 9 for z/OS, and preparing to use its new functions. Topics include the deprecated/removed function, plan stability, planning for rebind and access path change, VSCR, CPU improvement/regression, LRSN spin, improvements to COPY and RECOVER, object level recovery from system level backup, reordered row format, and more. We’ll also share with you some early customer migration experience.
1:45pm - Planning your DB2 migration – part II
This session continues the discussion and focus of “part 1” before lunch. While this presentation discusses the migration to DB2 9 for z/OS, it is primarily focused on the tasks of the person who installs DB2 9.
3:00pm - DB2 Tools to lower your operating costs
Tools for database performance tuning, administration, recovery, data security and compliance are critical to maintaining a healthy system. They also help control the total cost of ownership, and prepare for the future success of your enterprise. In this session, we’ll give you an overview of IBM‘s comprehensive set of database tools, designed to help you take advantage of the features of DB2 databases.
3:45 pm - DB2 utilities update
This presentation discusses the features of DB2 9 for z/OS utilities and DB2 for z/OS V8, including the use of the System z9® Integrated Information Processor (IBM zIIP).
We’ll review a set of best practices for performance, availability, and usability to be applied when using the utility suite. And, we’ll preview the future of DB2 utilities.
No matter your skill level, upon completion of this session you’ll be able to identify new utility functions and apply them in your shop.
