Pulse 2009: Managing System z
The mainframe plays a central role in today’s collaborative processing environments, and we developed a variety of sessions to choose from, based on your unique needs.
1506 - Virtualization on System z: Why do I care and how do I achieve value?
Learn how virtualization can maximize your ROI and why System z® is an optimal virtualization environment. This session will discuss how the Tivoli portfolio manages the host and virtualized guest systems and workloads by allowing the user to maximize resource utilization in a virtualized environment of mixed workloads.
1678 - z/VM and zLinux: Virtualization - Mainframe for a new generation
This case study presentation will be about System z9® BC implemented in the Academy of Humanities and Economics, in Lodz, Poland, and also by the faculty in a presentation called “Mainframe systems – virtualization, transactions, mass processing.” The speaker will show the structure of how second-level z/VM® and Linux® on System z is built and used by students and the company.
1324 - Best practices for composite application management – end-to-end monitoring
In this presentation, you will be introduced to monitoring best practices for heterogeneous environments. Topics include how to leverage monitoring information to create an end-to-end view of your business; and from distributed systems to System z, use-case scenarios of a real
implementation.
1504 - Best practices for isolating network problems on z/OS with OMEGAMON and NetView for z/OS
This session will show you the “next level” in network management on the mainframe, using IBM OMEGAMON® and NetView® for z/OS®. Using problem-solving usage scenarios, you’ll come away with practical tips and hints on how to solve common problems, such as OSA Express is slow, FTP slowdowns and failures, application is slow due to IP problems, Enterprise Extender and HPR performance problems, and many others. You will learn how to leverage OMEGAMON and NetView for z/OS to detect the most common z/OS communication server problems, and examine key indicators to determine root causes.
1486 - Information on Demand: Business resilient solutions for System z – featuring DB2 for z/OS and IMS
When you need information – and need it on demand 24x7 – you have to be able to meet short-term immediate needs and the longer-term strategic requirements. IBM Information Management software products for the System z provide business resilient solutions with built-in flexibility, scalability, high availability and longevity to deliver tactical and strategic projects without redesigning them. This session will cover DB2®, DB2 Tools, IMS™ and IMS Tools and the Information Management System z portfolio. Hear the highlights across all of these products and how they enhance business resilience – a must for customers who demand business continuity!
1121 - Challenges in managing your z/OS storage environment? What can the IBM Tivoli System z Storage solutions can do for you?
This session will show you how the Tivoli storage products for System z can save you time, increase productivity and help you get more out of your resources. We will take a look at what is new in the storage management for System z portfolio, how these products integrate together, their basic capabilities, and cover the wide breadth of storage management functions this portfolio provides. We’ll share some tips on set-up and the types of problems to look for, how you may want to approach solving those problems and how to leverage these tools for maximum benefit.
1241 - Building out a solution for z/VM and Linux on System z performance management end-to-end monitoring
This presentation outlines how the IBM internal account has leveraged the OMEGAMON XE on z/VM and Linux® software. It will cover the mechanics of how the OMEGAMON XE on z/VM and Linux product was implemented, what the issues were and how we solved them. Attendees will see how a full end-to-end monitoring solution was built and how the various operating systems, from X to Z, can be managed in a centralized environment. Details will include the overall ITM 6 architecture; the installation of the ITM components; ITM configurations, including Linux agents on System z and the z/VM agent; event integration into the Tivoli Enterprise Console®; and lessons learned.
1567 - ITM historical data collection and reporting for capacity planning and trending
This session will discuss how Lockheed Martin took a procedural approach to implementing performance tuning and capacity planning on z/OS using ITM facilities such as historical data collection, persistent data stores and the Tivoli data warehouse. It will address historical reporting of z/OS, CICS, DB2, WebSphere MQ, TCP/IP and VTAM® (SNA), including key performance indicators used, historical data sources, collection and management, reporting and trending analysis applications with higher confidence and less risk.
1334 - Enterprise-wide automation for your application landscape
How can you automate the operations of your heterogeneous business applications running on z/OS, AIX®, Linux, Windows®, or Solaris™? How can you manage multiple z/OS sysplexes? With IBM Tivoli System Automation Application Manager (the next version of System Automation for Multiplatforms End-to-End Automation), you can automate the availability of your business applications end-to-end from a single point of control, managing cross-cluster dependencies. The functionality and platform coverage of System Automation Application Manager is extended to include coordinated disaster recovery scenarios with Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS®) covering z/OS and distributed platforms.
1140 - Managing your enterprise from System z
IBM Service Management (ISM) is the essential way forward for Service Management solutions. This is no less true for the System z environment, which remains the cornerstone of an increasingly diverse and business centered IT environment. IBM Tivoli Service Management Center (SMC) for System z turns the mainframe into an enterprise-wide service management hub, centrally managing business and IT services for mainframe and distributed. This session will take you through the SMC for System z specifics from a managed system perspective as well as from a management hub perspective. We will focus on the different deployment scenarios and the benefits each provides.
1827 - Leveraging Tivoli zSecure – Beyond just RACF administration
The increasing number and complexity of threats and compliance initiatives place new internal pressures on businesses, requiring systems and process monitoring and auditing. Businesses and IT also face increasing pressure to drive down costs, while labor costs continue to rise and grow at the expense of development budgets. Efficiency and effectiveness of security controls are paramount to getting costs under control. Learn how Tivoli zSecure assisted Honda to enhance RACF® administration. The initiative helped improve the effectiveness of Honda’s security controls and addressed audit and compliance concerns through automated processes, monitoring and reporting.
1390 - End-to-end workload management
This session focuses on strategic themes with IBM Tivoli Workload Automation (TWA), helping customers maximize investments on the System z platform, exploiting inherent and unique operational value of System z while simplifying management. You’ll learn how TWA handles System z centric hybrid composite services and workloads through a single engine, aligning IT with business, eliminating operational inefficiencies, and virtualizing resources. We’ll also discuss end-to-end composite workload management, dynamic adjustment of workload to IT resource changes, plan optimization through historical data and trend analysis, and how SLAs management all contribute to making TWA the hub for mixed end-to-end services execution.
