Mobile is huge. The use of mobile devices and apps is pervasive in our everyday lives - on average, mobile users check their devices 30 times per hour. And with an estimated 200 million employees expected to join those already following a “bring your own device” policy at work, the market has barely been tapped.

But the bar is much higher for enterprise mobile. Mobile apps must not only satisfy user needs with flexible development tools; they must also connect seamlessly with backend systems, allow centralized management, and meet enterprise security requirements.

This demand for robust, secure mobile apps is driving IBM’s strategy for mobility on System z®, starting with Linux® on System z. Clients are focused on three key capability sets, and these are particular strengths of System z:

.Building and connecting mobile applications
Using IBM Worklight Studio with Rational® Developer gives customers a common set of tools for end-to-end mobile development for System z. Companies get the advantages of native app development, and then use WebSphere® MQ and IBM Integration Bus to connect back-end applications with mobile devices.

.Managing and securing mobile applications and devices
A single security breach can cost millions; enterprise-class mobile solutions must secure transactions from virtually any device and location while keeping the network protected and running efficiently. IBM Endpoint Manager provides this single point of control. Although Windows®-based, it can be extended to other platforms, including System z, where enterprise data is secured.

.Extending mobile capabilities and transforming business with new opportunities
Mobile is core to IBM’s Smarter Commerce strategy and integrated portfolio; soon we’ll be seeing solutions that link mobile with analytics and social business, help our clients reinvent the customer experience, and empower employees and partners with anywhere-anytime information and collaboration.

The future of mobile on System z
Mobile is a transformational business model that is changing the way we work. IBM’s goal is to be the #1 provider for mobile solutions, and clearly, System z will play a strong role in our success – from helping customers define their mobile strategy, develop, secure and manage it, to extending mobile to the point of transformation. “Mobile as a service” is not that far away, and System z's unique and critical role in this space will continue to grow.
