The IBM Directory is a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory that runs as a stand-alone daemon. It is based on a client/server model that provides client access to an LDAP server. The IBM Directory provides an easy way to maintain directory information in a central location for storage, updating, retrieval, and exchange.
The IBM Directory supports LDAP referrals, allowing directory operations to be redirected to another LDAP directory server. Replication of the LDAP Directory is supported and allows for additional copies of the directory to be available for directory read operations, which increases performance and reliability when accessing directory information.
The IBM Directory Server Version 4.1 carries the Tivoli Ready logo. An IBM Software product which carries the Tivoli Ready logo can be managed through the Tivoli Management Enterprise (TME) products. The management support provided by the IBM Directory Server Version 4.1 allows for automatic discovery, monitoring, start and stop processes/services from Tivoli Global Enterprise Manager console and inventory by Tivoli Inventory software.
The Tivoli Ready enablement files provided by the IBM Directory Server Version 4.1 are located in the following directory after installation of the server component:
install_path/tivready
where install_path is the path to the IBM Directory Server Version 4.1 installation. Please refer to Tivoli_Ready_README.txt in this directory for detailed information on installation and configuration of the Tivoli Ready enablement.
Note: Please go to the IBM Directory Web site for the Readme Addendum for 4.1, which contains important information that was not included in the Readmes.
Note: The IBM Directory Server Version 4.1 uses the JNDI client from Sun Microsystems. For information about the JNDI client, go to the Sun Microsystems Web site at http://java.sun.com/products/jndi/1.2/javadoc/index.html
The IBM Directory Server Version 4.1 contains graphical user interfaces:
Note:
This web-based interface allows the administrator to perform server and database tasks using a frame-enabled java-capable web browser. Use Server Administration to:
If you did not configure the database, web server, and administrator DN during installation, you must run the configuration utility prior to using Server Administration.
To run the configuration utility, type ldapxcfg at a command prompt. On Windows NT and Windows 2000, you can also access the Directory Configuration utility using the Start menu.
To use server administration, open a frame-enabled java-capable web browser and access the URL for Server Administration using the format:
http[s]://hostname.domainname[:port]/ldap
For example, http://server.ibm.com/ldap for a non-secure server with an unspecified port or https://server.ibm.com:80 for a secure server using port 80.
To begin using Server Administration, you must:
Go to Server Administration Help for additional information about using Server Administration.

The Directory Management Tool provides a graphical user interface that enables you to manage information stored in directory servers. Use the tool to:
To use the Directory Management Tool, type dmt at a command prompt.
On Windows NT, you can also access the Directory Management Tool using the Start menu.
When you launch the Directory Management Tool, it automatically tries to connect anonymously to a server running on localhost, using port 389. If the server is not running, an error msg will be displayed. Click the Add server button to connect to a different LDAP server.
You can modify the configuration file to connect to another server. Consult the Installation and Configuration section of the Directory Management Tool Help for additional information.
