What Is New for This Release

CS/AIX V6 replaces CS/AIX Version 5 (V5).

Previous releases of this product that are still supported are:

• CS/AIX Version 4 Release 1 (V4R1)

New Functions

The following functions have been added to CS/AIX since V5:

• Web Administration program provides a web-based configuration tool for CS/AIX. This allows you to administer CS/AIX from your browser without the need to start an X session or telnet session to the CS/AIX server, and is particularly useful when connecting over slow or unreliable links.
• Enterprise Extender (HPR/IP) provides HPR functionality over IP connections, to support SNA applications connected over an IP network.
• Branch Extender simplifies large APPN networks by separating out resources in different locations (for example in separate branches of a large organization). This reduces the amount of topology information that must be maintained, while still allowing efficient resource location.
• TN Server support has been extended to include the following:
  • Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) support now includes client authentication. This allows a TN Server to verify that the TN3270 client connecting to it is the one it expects. The TN Server can also check a revocation list on an external LDAP server to ensure that the client's authorization has not been revoked.
  • Service Location Protocol (SLP) provides service location and load balancing functions for TN Servers. Each TN Server advertises the functions it supports and its current user load; this allows an SLP-capable TN3270 client to select the "best" server to connect to (the least loaded server that provides the functions it requires).
• TN Redirector provides passthrough TCP/IP host access to TN3270, TN3270E, TN5250 and VT clients, referred to collectively as Telnet clients. The Telnet user communicates with CS/AIX over a TCP/IP connection; CS/AIX then communicates with the host over another TCP/IP connection. This allows you to use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) security checking where necessary, and not on the complete user-to-host connection.
• MultiPath Channel Plus (MPC+) support is provided in addition to the existing MultiPath Channel. MPC+ provides HPR connectivity over channel connections.
• Applications using the CS/AIX APIs can now be compiled and linked to run in either 32-bit mode or 64-bit mode.
• The CPI-C API can now be used by Javaapplications as well as by standard C-language programs.
• CS/AIX licensing is now based on the number of concurrent users of the product, rather than on the number of sessions. Broadly, each of the following counts as a user:
  • A user of an application program running on the CS/AIX computer.
  • A link (SNA or TCP/IP) between CS/AIX and another computer.
  • A user on another computer using telnet to access the CS/AIX computer.

  New functions are provided to record information about the current and peak usage of SNA resources; you can use these functions to help determine whether your usage is within the limits permitted by your license.

No functions have been retired for this release of CS/AIX.

Back-Level API Support

The following APIs are included to provide support for existing TPs written for CS/AIX V4. Because these APIs may not be supported in future releases, it is recommended that you do not develop new applications using these APIs.

• Generic SNA (requires that SNA gateway be enabled on the node)
• LU 0
• Operating System Subroutines (LU types 1, 2, 3, and 6.2)
• Library Subroutines for TP Conversations (LU types 1, 2, 3, and 6.2)
• Library Subroutines for Network Management, used for exchanging network management vector transports (NMVTs) on SSCP-PU sessions
• Management Services (MS)
