There is a known performance issue with applications hanging in SmartSuite 96, SmartSuite 97 and SmartSuite 9 (Millennium Edition) when the Notes R5 client and SmartSuite are running simultaneously. The problem is more noticeable when many Notes documents are open or when using a Notes Welcome page style other than "Basics."
Applying this update to a machine that has SmartSuite and Notes 5 installed addresses the following performance issues:
* If Notes 5 is running, SmartSuite applications run significantly slower when you move the cursor over the SmartIcon bar, or when you click a SmartIcon.
* If Notes 5 is running, 1-2-3 97 becomes unusable almost immediately. The following activities run slowly:
- Loading the splash screen
- Resizing the main window
- Opening a dialog

To install the SmartSuite Notes 5 Update:
- Download the update to your machine.
- Close Notes and any SmartSuite applications.
- Start Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer.
- Double-click SSUPDTSE.EXE. If the update encounters a problem, it displays a warning message before ending.
You can also eliminate these problems for all SmartSuite applications (except 1-2-3 97) by turning off Bubble Help in each SmartSuite product. To fix the problem for 1-2-3 97, you must run the update utility mentioned above, or upgrade to a more current release of 1-2-3.
To turn off Bubble Help in SmartSuite products:
- From the File menu, choose User Preferences, and then choose SmartIcons Setup.
- Uncheck the "Show icon descriptions (bubble help)" checkbox.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each SmartSuite product you have installed.

Lotus provides the update for Notes 5 and SmartSuite to resolve specific performance issues that occur when you use Notes 5 and SmartSuite applications at the same time.
Applying this update to a computer that has SmartSuite and Notes 5 installed addresses the following performance issues:
* If Notes 5 is running, SmartSuite applications run significantly slower when you move the cursor over the SmartIcon bar, or when you click a SmartIcon.
* If Notes 5 is running, 1-2-3 97 becomes unusable almost immediately. The following activities run slowly:

In these cases, the response is slow enough that it appears as if the application has completely stopped.
* If Notes R5 is installed on you computer and you open or save a notes attachment through SmartSuite, SmartSuite applications can crash when you exit.
Installing the update
The update makes enhancements to US and European versions of SmartSuite. Updates for Far Eastern versions of SmartSuite will be available shortly.
Installing the update from the notes 5.01 cd
- Close Notes and any SmartSuite applications.
- Start File Manager, Windows Explorer, or Windows NT Explorer.
- Go to the update in this directory and double-click it.
- Select a drive or "all local drives" and click OK.
- The update runs to completion, click OK when 'The update completed successfully' message appears.
- If the update encounters a problem, it displays 'Could not apply the update.' message before ending, click OK.
Description of the update
The update searches for files and replaces them if they are versions that need to be updated.
Files that potentially change
The update replaces the files listed below if it finds them on your local hard drives:
- MAIN123W.DLL
- LTSBUB01.DLL
- LTBUBN11.DLL
- LTBUBN12.DLL
- LTNOSN02.DLL
Possible reasons for 'Could not apply the update.' message.
This error message has one of the following meanings:
Problem: One of the SmartSuite files was in use.
Resolution: Close all SmartSuite applications before running the update.
Problem: One of the SmartSuite files was read-only.
Resolution: Use the File/Properties dialog of Windows Explorer to make the files not read-only.
Problem: This installation of SmartSuite is a Server/Node installation, and so most of the SmartSuite files are on a network drive.
Resolution: Have your system administrator use the instructions above in 'COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS' to run the update.
Problem: You have an earlier version of 123 97 that cannot be fixed with this update.
Resolution: You must update to a later version of 123: either the interim update for 123 97 that is available on the Lotus support site, or a later version of SmartSuite such as the SmartSuite Millennium Edition.
Alternatives to installing the update
If you are not using 1-2-3 97, you can work around the performance issues by turning off bubble help in the SmartSuite applications you use.
To turn off Bubble Help:
- From the File menu, choose User Preferences, and then choose SmartIcons Setup.
