Designed to provide protection for organizations of all sizes, the IBM® Lotus® Protector for Mail Security 2.8 software appliance is available in two deployment options:
1. Software appliance: Install the Lotus Protector for Mail Security software appliance on off-the-shelf IBM System x® or Dell hardware and deploy as a physical appliance
2. Virtual Appliance: Install Lotus Protector for Mail Security on supported VMware software and deploy as a virtualized appliance.
3. Software that is compatible with (but not required) Lotus Protector for Mail Security

The Lotus Protector for Mail Security 2.8 software appliance is certified to run natively on high quality, cost-effective IBM System x or Dell hardware as a physical appliance.

1 No operating system is needed. Lotus Protector for Mail Security 2.8 software includes a Linux operating system, and runs natively on IBM System x hardware.

Virtual appliance
Lotus Protector for Mail Security 2.8 is certified to run on VMware as a virtual appliance. Ideally suited for small to midsize businesses and scalable to more strategic operating specifications as required.
1 Lotus Protector includes a Linux operating system and runs as installed software in a VMware partition. VMware partitions the physical machine into multiple virtual machines.
2 Customer provided hardware that has one of the required VMware platforms installed
3 Minimum memory and storage requirements to support the virtualized operating system plus all virtual instances.
4 Requires a DVD ROM minimum to install Lotus Protector
5 VMware ESXi installations should use Intel E1000 NICs.
6 Measured filtering on VMware ESX 4.0 and Workstation 5.5 of incoming internet emails of average size with pre-filters turned off. IP pre-filtering and SMTP pre-filtering increase throughput.
MS3004LP Appliance
The MS3004LP Appliance from IBM ISS is no longer sold. However, Lotus Protector for Mail Security 2.8 supports the MS3004LP appliance. Upgrade your MS3004LP to Lotus Protector for Mail Security 2.8 to gain all the enhancements and up to 500% performance improvement (your results may vary).
