Making encryption work on the Internet doesn't have to be hard. The IBM® Lotus® Protector for Mail Encryption software appliance is engineered to make it easy, creating the most seamless security-rich communication paths between IBM Lotus Notes® users and third parties regardless of recipient email system, including Microsoft Exchange.
The Lotus Protector for Mail Encryption gateway uses public key cryptography to create security-rich connections between an email sender and recipient. When a Lotus Notes user sends an encrypted email on the Internet, the gateway attempts to locate a public key for the recipient across a set of key servers – for example, in the senders domain, the Lotus Protector for Mail Encryption gateway, or even a national public key server. Once located, a mailbox-to-mailbox communication path is created between the Lotus Notes user and the recipient, allowing encrypted email to be easily exchanged with no user intervention required.
If a public key for the recipient cannot be found, the Lotus Protector for Mail Encryption gateway may instead, for example, send the recipient a link to the gateway, where the recipient can authenticate, and read and respond to encrypted email. Alternately, the recipeint can be directed to download software from the gateway that allows them to create a public key for themselves on the gateway server. They can also be sent a password protected PDF that contains the email content.
