IBM License Metric Tool Information

Updated July 28, 2009

The IBM License Metric Tool [ILMT] helps you maintain an inventory of the PVU based software deployed for your Full Capacity or Virtualization (Sub-) Capacity environment, and measures the PVU licenses required by software Product.  It is intended to help you manage your IBM software licensing requirements, and help you maintain an audit ready posture.  Customers are responsible for supplying hardware and installation services required for installing the tool.

Version 7.1 of ILMT was announced on July 1, 2008 via Software Announcement 208-197 and customers had 90 days from the physical media general availability date of August 1, 2008 to install and begin using ILMT for supported virtualization technologies.  Version 7.2 of ILMT was announced on July 28, 2009 via 209-220 with electronic general availability on July 31, 2009 and physical media general availability on August 21, 2009. Existing ILMT V7.1 customers should prompty install the V7.2 release. New/existing sub-capacity customers waiting on ILMT V7.2 for the newly supported virtualization technologies (VMware, PowerVM) have 90 days from August 21, 2009 to install V7.2.

Use of IBM License Metric Tool

The use of IBM License Metric Tool is recommended for Full Capacity PVU environments, and is mandatory for use with PVU sub-capacity licensing.  Exceptions to this requirement are:

  1. when ILMT does not yet provide support for the Eligible Virtualization Environment
    • (In order to be notified when ILMT support for eligible virtualization technologies become available, customers need to subscribe to "My Notifications".
  2. if your Enterprise has fewer than 1,000 employees and contractors worldwide, you are not a Service Provider, and you have not contracted with a Service Provider to manage your Eligible Virtualization Environment
  3. if your Enterprise’s total physical capacity of your servers with an Eligible Virtualization Environment, measured on a Full Capacity basis, but licensed using sub-capacity terms is less than 1,000 PVUs.

For the above exceptions, customers must manually manage, track, and prepare a Manual Calculation of Virtual Capacity worksheet for each server or cluster (group of servers).  For more details about the requirements for this worksheet, you can go to Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules or use the Manual Calculation of Virtual Capacity worksheet available from the right hand nav bar.

With the July 28, 2009 announcement of Tivoli Asset Discovery for Distributed V7.2 [TADd], an optional feature of Tivoli Asset Manager for IT V7.2 [TAMIT], Tivoli Asset Discovery for Distributed V7.2 [TADd] can be used in lieu of ILMT V7.2.  For more information, visit Tivoli Asset Manager for IT and  Tivoli Asset Discovery for Distributed.

With Fix Pack #5 released in December 2008, the IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager V2.3 (ITLCM) can be used in lieu of ILMT V7.1. Visit IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager for more information on ITLCM.  Please go to IBM Tivoli License Compliance Manager 2.3, Fix Pack 2.3.0 for specific information about Fix Pack #5. ITLCM V2.3 was withdrawn from marketing on July 28, 2009 via 909-167 and replaced by TAMIT/TADd

Whether using ILMT, ITLCM V2.3 w/ FP5, TADd V7.2, or the Manual Calculation worksheet, customers must maintain documentation for at least two years to demonstrate ongoing compliance with these Sub-Capacity Licensing terms.

For details of Sub-capacity licensing requirements, including requirements for maintaining documentation, see the Sub-Capacity Licensing Attachment and the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules.
