IDC Worldwide Collaborative Applications 2008 Vendor Shares
[Excerpt from IDC #218330] This IDC report estimates that for 2008, $3.1 billion in worldwide revenue was generated by sales of integrated collaborative environment offerings. This represents an increase of 10.2% over the prior year despite the weakening global economy. Per IDC, IBM continues to hold over a third of the market share, ranking #2, while all remaining vendors combined represent less than 15% of the market." Further IBM's revenue continues to grow at close to the overall market growth for 2008.
IDC recommends that clients should position collaborative applications as one of the keys for organizations to survive and emerge from the global recession. Cutting back on investment in collaboration tools will make it even harder for leaner workforces to get work done with the quality and responsiveness that their customers demand.
IDC defines the "integrated collaborative environment (ICEs) as a framework for electronic collaboration with core integrated-functionality areas for email, group calendaring and scheduling, shared folders/databases, threaded discussions, and custom application development. It is IBM's experience that this definition is what most IT decisions are based upon to ensure a holistic and well integrated enterprise collaborative environment.
