Davalen's Top Gun Training Unleashes the Power of Portlet Factory for Lotus Developers

LOTUSPHERE, ORLANDO, FL. January 19, 2009 - Davalen announces the release of TG916 - IBM Websphere Portlet Factory Top Gun Application Development 6.1. This five day deep dive into WebSphere Portlet Factory is designed for seasoned IBM Lotus Notes developers who are being asked to join IBM Websphere Portal development teams and need to become productive quickly. Davalen's class is the only instructor led class available for Websphere Portlet Factory 6.1. Students can attend the class remotely via Davalen's virtual classroom, a Davalen instructor can teach at the client site, or the student can attend at Davalen's training center.

WebSphere Portlet Factory is a powerful development tool that allows developers to create applications for Websphere Portal with limited knowledge of the java programming language. After working with multiple clients on portlet development, Davalen, LLC discovered that there was a gap in the students' learning of the tool. Davalen's Chief Technology Officer and IBM Certified Instructor in WebSphere Portlet Factory, David Wilkerson, explains "They lacked knowledge of design patterns, relevant techniques and the in-depth familiarity with some of the features which are not taught in the tutorials and introductory training."

Davalen's Portlet Factory Practice Manager, Michael "Spoon" Witherspoon responded with the first version of the course in 2007. Websphere Portlet Factory and Lotus Notes training veteran Kevin Wilmeth joined the Davalen team in 2008 to assist with TG916 and with mentoring clients as they implement WebSphere Portlet Factory.

A project leader explained the common problem. "We had a small development team that was working on the very first portal project at our company and we had decided to use WebSphere Portlet Factory as the development tool. We took the traditional WebSphere Portlet Factory courses and then floundered for a couple of months. We finally decided that we needed some help." Finding Davalen the large Midwest Insurance Company learned of the Top Gun curriculum that IBM was endorsing.

"We started by taking the WebSphere Portlet Factory Top Gun course," she explained. "This course is terrific! It got us going again and made us much more productive. The course is very well structured and the exercises really reinforce what was learned. The course includes many 'best practices' that are taken from real life situations. The instructor has done portlet factory development work and can provide insight from real life experience." She went on claiming, "They [Davalen] provide excellent service and deliver quality in everything they do. We are very confident that the Davalen Portlet Factory consultants know WebSphere Portlet Factory product and its capabilities very well and therefore are an invaluable resource to have available."

The Davalen Top Gun series uses practical best practice examples gleaned directly from WebSphere Portlet Factory clients. This course bridges the gap by taking students from learning "about" the tool to learning how to build an application "using" the tool. Freshly updated for v6.1 and moving more in depth, TG916 is the only curriculum available for the latest release of WebSphere Portlet Factory. Several new Top Gun courses for WebSphere Portlet Factory are on the horizon covering areas from Lotus Domino Integration, Customer Builder Development and Dashboard Framework.

Student and Lotus Notes Developer, Paul Calhoun of NetNotes Solutions Unlimited claimed "I was able to create portlets and use the program effectively right after training thanks to the well structure course, experienced instructors and effective labs" while further explaining, "Davalen has created a training series that goes above and beyond, perfect for a Lotus developer new to this fascinating and helpful program."

Offering new opportunities and effective solutions to their clients, Davalen is proving to be an innovative front runner in assisting Lotus Developers in their transition to the Websphere environment.
