System z Expo video

Introduction

Steve Zeidman

You can run any kind of workload on System z that you’d like.

Ray J. Paramore

We have had actually zero downtime attributed to the z box.

Cletus McGee

The box is just solid. And so, we can stake our business on that box.

Resiliency

Bill Homa

We demonstrated when I was at Hannaford that we could support the supply chain, the entire supply chain for an 18 billion dollar retailer with only the technology that z brought to the table. …. It’s kind of interesting that you can run the supply chain for a multi billion dollar company on two z10s.

Mike Riggs

The resiliency of the System z provides us the ability to give the services not just to the judiciary, but to the citizens of Virginia. Being able to pay your traffic ticket any time of the day, seven days a week that you want to is important. It’s a huge impact on the community, on the state, and our processes as well.

Steve Zeidman

I think the benefits of System z to our customers is the fact that it’s so completely reliable and we frankly don’t suffer outages on the mainframe, so our ability to provide highly available applications, I think really sells the platform.

Chris Hamill

IBM mainframes continue to be centric to our customers’ requirement for continuous availability. They don’t, pretty much expect us to ever come down. In the five years that I’ve been running the systems for the customers, we have not had outages.

Energy Efficiency

Ray J. Paramore

The positive impact that System z has had on our business is that it’s reduced footprint. We’ve gone significantly smaller, we’ve got more horsepower. Now when you walk into the computer room, people look for the mainframe and we actually have to walk them over and show them the small cabinet that it is.

Cletus McGee

We know IBM’s commitment to the green initiative. …. we know that box is saving us energy, we know it has a smaller footprint but more power and any time you get that combination, you know that you’re going to be saving energy.

Consolidation

William Gardner

We’re thrilled to be where we’re going on this. We’ve already moved all our databases onto the z9, and we’ve been in production since last summer.

Mike Riggs

The consolidation of workload is huge. We don’t have to maintain multiple systems. The virtualization technology available on the System z allows us to do things quicker, faster and better and offer a timely response to the requests that we get for the development and day-to-day operations.

Bill Homa

What was done was a consolidation story at all levels in terms of batch processing and transaction processing and web services and database processing. That’s the advantage of System z is that all that can be handled on one machine.

Linux

William Gardner

Currently, we have all our Oracle databases running on virtual Linux hosts. Ultimately, we hope to be able to consolidate all our application servers using WebSphere also on the z, and that point in time, we will have the majority of our workload on the z platform.

Bill Homa

Well, the Linux consolidation on z benefits are similar to all the other workload on z, in that whole workload can be managed with a very small staff. So, if you can imagine managing hundreds of servers in mainframe workloads supporting the transactions for a large company with a staff of four people.

Closure

Chris Hamill

They like the fact that you don’t have to concern yourself about security in a mainframe. It’s that closure, the entry point which is not as common in other platforms that allows them to sleep at night.

Ray J. Paramore

Things such as being able to have efficient and quick wire transfers, being able to get your money from an ATM – even during an emergency, being able to do internet banking and being able to do that 24 hours a day. These are very important things to our customers and, you know, the mainframe is the backbone behind that. It’s what makes this world turn.
