SAP IT Chooses DB2 for the SAP Corporate Business Systems

The main driver for choosing IBM on DB2 was about the simple question: "What do we get for the money?" And, even large customers like SAP have to consider database license costs.

Now we pay significantly less every year for using a database as a simple black box.

But it's not about the money only. We need a good level of trust and the partnership with IBM provides the necessary support capabilities that we need to run our terabyte environment.

We rely on IBM, and IBM has not let us down.

We saw three key areas that we wanted to leverage just like our customers:

- Simplification, Standardisation of our infrastructure

- benefitting from the strong partnership IBM and SAP

- and using the superior database features of DB2.

IBM DB2 improved by 40 % the database performance in our corporate HR.

Due to a better data representation, we reduced our storage requirements by 20 % in the corporate ERP. In our corporate CRM we implemented self-tuning memory management and deep compression to a smaller scale to improve our database memory efficiency and the I/O efficiency.

Based on these facts and experiences we decided to roll out the self-tuning memory management and the deep compression to our environment. Especially from the deep compression, we expect a huge amount of data reduction in our storage environment.

For our corporate ERP system, we combined the database migration, the Unicode migration, and the ERP upgrade and by that, we were able to reduce the additional effort of the database migration to an absolute minimum.

After operating SAP corporate business systems on IBM DB2 for more than 1 year, we've found that IBM kept every one of its promises. There was never any overselling of database capabilities. All the migrations were smooth and straightforward.

We finished in time, and, even more importantly, on budget.
