Businesses need to consider building more dynamic infrastructures to respond to changing business challenges. To fulfill this need, businesses can implement a smart SOA.
Kustiawan Kusumo, Country Manager, Software Group, IBM Indonesia, said that businesses with complex business processes should start considering building SOA-based IT infrastructures.
He added that with siloed IT infrastructure, businesses cannot anticipate today’s dynamic business world, which commonly require integrated applications.
“With this approach, it is difficult to connect one application with another, especially with the increasing number of applications to be connected,” said Kustiawan at the IBM Service Management Conference 2009 in Jakarta, Tuesday (19/5).
Meanwhile, SOA offers a different application building approach as it builds comprehensive business applications. SOA breaks down these business applications into several business processes and functionality components. These components can be reused to build other business applications. This way, new applications or services can be launched faster.
“This, of course will accelerate the time-to-market of a new services,” he said.
Kustiono continued that SOA implementation is no longer identical to a complex IT project that requires a long time to complete with unpredictable results.
“The key to a successful SOA implementation is not to start big, but start from something that can deliver a quick win or benefits,” he said.
According to him, SOA can be implemented is several stages, starting from the internal aspects, such as human resources, and followed by the other departments. One it is completed, the organisation can expand the implementation to include its external supply chain with its partners and its customers.
Kustiawan added that IBM has new SOA offerings, called Smart SOA, which includes process templates and capabilities designed according to the specific needs of the vertical industries.
