| Business Need:
Wanting to maximize revenue from existing business and generate new income, Zagrebacka Banka launched a project called ZabaCard. The creation of ZabaCard would require the replacement of existing back office card applications with a new application capable of supporting the bank's extensive customer base. Zagrebacka Bank knew that an open standards based, integrated platform would make it easy to deploy new services and products quickly, enabling the company to react quickly to changes in the market.

| Solution:
Zagrebacka Bank turned to IBM for a robust e-business platform to support the ZabaCard project. The company decided to use two IBM eServer zSeries 900 servers running CICS Transaction Gateway and CICS Transaction Server.
Running in parallel sysplex mode with z/OS V1.2, the servers host three software layers as part of a two-tier architecture. At the base, the application is supported by a DB2 V7.1 database. The next layer uses CICS Transaction Server V2.2 to process financial transactions from the application. The application itself was developed using Java, and connects to the transaction layer through CICS Transaction Gateway V5. These three layers comprise the first tier. The second tier consists of a Java-based thin client running on PCs for user access.
On this robust zSeries infrastructure, Zagrebacka Banka is developing two major banking applications - Cash Management and Card Management. With the help of the IBM PSSC z/benchmark Center in Montpellier and the IBM Business Partner Vestigo, the bank executed performance tests on these applications. For the Cash Management application, IBM simulated 200 concurrent users generating an approximate transaction rate of ten per second. The result was an average response time of less than one second. In performance testing of the Card Management application, IBM simulated 1,000 concurrent users with an approximate transaction rate of 18 per second. Again, the response time was less than one second.

| Benefits of the Solution:
The new ZabaCard system enables Zagrebacka Banks to introduce new products and services to its customers and partners more quickly. This overarching benefit stems from the advantages inherent in using Java as a standard programming language and leveraging the robust IBM eServer zSeries servers. The bank unified its software development efforts onto just Java, which made administration and management easier. The combination of Java, CICS Transaction Server/Gateway and zSeries servers lives up to the user response time requirements. zSeries ensures that the high performance is backed up with reliability and scalability, as well.
