References to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao

References to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao should be used appropriately in all instances to avoid culturally-sensitive issues.

Pay close attention to how you use Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao in Web content and application development. In particular, do not use references or include them in lists that suggest they are countries. Using “country or region” as a title in lists is an acceptable alternative. The following guidelines will help you avoid sensitive issues:

  • Taiwan
    - Use "Taiwan" rather than "Republic of China," "R.O.C.," or "Taiwan, Province of China."
    - In the Taiwanese calendar, "ROC" is the name used to refer to the year, similar to the use of AD or BC in the Gregorian calendar. It is unacceptable to Taiwan to change this to any other term. At this time there is no known term that is acceptable to both Taiwan and China. It is recommended that, in this one case, the term "ROC" should be left as-is wherever it is used to generate culturally correct dates in the code. Ideally ROC references related to the calendar should be removed from documentation if at all possible. Work is under way to identify an acceptable solution for this specific case.
  • Hong Kong
    - Use "Hong Kong S.A.R. of the PRC" or "Hong Kong S.A.R. of China" (S.A.R. stands for Special Administrative Region).
  • Macao
    - Use "Macao S.A.R. of the PRC" or "Macao S.A.R. of China."
    - Use "Macao" with an "o" on the end for English language usage, and "Macau" with a "u" at the end for Portuguese language usage.
