| IBM launched the LanguageWare project 2001 with the vision of creating common NLP components that could be flexibly applied to a wide range of challenges across IBM's entire product portfolio, where it would play a role at different stages of the entire information lifecycle.
Create: It would improve content consistency, and it's associated meta-data, through semi-automatic analysis at content creation. Store: It would generate valuable meta-data which could be leveraged for subsequent analysis - integrating multiple sources of structured and unstructured information. Find: It would help enhance search experience through leveraging semantics, social networks, taxonomies & folksonomies to uncover knowledge hidden in the unstructured content. Understand: It would support BI techniques and algorithms to extract actionable knowledge and insight from vast quantities of available information (structured & unstructured).

Our philosophy was to create light-weight openly transparent component technology that could be easily embedded into any existing solution to provide natural language understanding unobtrusively for the end user.
