The national group is used for languages which use a script other than Latin. ISO/IEC 9995 currently assigns this to Group 1 although there are existing keyboard layouts (such as the Greek keyboard) where the national group is assigned to Group 2. Group 2 is normally selected by pressing shift-alt, but this varies by platform, and can be customized. To type a theta (θ) using the Greek keyboard you would first switch to the Greek group using the group select keys (shift-alt), and then press the U key (or the θ key in Greek). If the national group is assigned to Group 2, the graphic characters would be engraved on the right side of the keytop.
