| Creating successful software for worldwide use requires attention to locale details ranging from date and time to numeric formatting. |

|
 | Unlike most address formats in the western countries, which go from the inside out - name, company, street address, city, state/province, country, an address in Chinese goes from the outside in - country, province, city, etc. China uses a 6 digit postal code which is put in special designated boxes in standard envelops and mailing labels. Hong Kong and Macao do not use postal code.
China has 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 centrally administered municipalities, and 2 special administrative regions. You can download the HTML code for creating a drop down selection box to enter one of them on a web page. |

 | The general telephone format is (Country Code)-(Area Code)-(Telephone Number). The Country Code for China is 86. The Area Code can be up to 5 digits in length, starting with "0" (which is dropped when used with the Country Code). Cell phones genearlly have the Area Codes "013x". The Telephone Number can be up to 8 digits.
This format does not apply to Hong Kong and Macau which have their own "Country Codes" (852 and 853 respectively) and no Area Code. |

 | | Traditionally China has its own units of measure but they have been mostly been replaced by the metric system. One remnant of the traditional system is the jin (sometime translated as "catty" in English), a measurement of weight that was about one and a quarter pound. A jin now refers to 500 gm and is used mainly for shopping. |
