The world : Tryscience prepares the next generation of leaders
Youngsters aged 8 to 14 in seven major countries now have the opportunity to enhance their science skills at the Tryscience Web site and at interactive kiosks deployed in over 100 science centers. The 8-language Web site went live in Portuguese, French, German, Italian and Spanish in 2001 and in Japanese and Chinese in 2003. Originally created at the request of the New York Hall of Science, TryScience is the result of a partnership between IBM, the New York Hall of Science, the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) and Science Centers worldwide. For the past four years, the IBM Web Translation Competency Center has played a key role in the realization of this multilingual project, managing all aspects of translation and creation of Web sites. Managed from Montreal, Canada the translation is performed in the local Translation Services Centers to leverage the skills of native translators who know their culture and country-specific requirements best. TrysScience has been described as “a site for children, parents and teachers which captures the best science experiments, information and news from science and technology museums around the world and features them on one easy-to-use site designed for children". IBM offers students a wealth of information on a vast array of topics, plus the excitement of discovery in a Web site that is educational and fun.
