There's a wealth of valuable data in old legacy systems. jStart has created a way for companies to extract that data for use in Web 2.0 technologies--like mashups. In a recent developerWorks article jStart illustrates how companies can extract information out of their old mainframe 3270 and 5250 systems, and expose that information for use within a mashup. It's about leveraging valuable data living within existing older systems into the latest cutting edge web applications.
How jStart is involved
As with many technologies jStart develops, the idea was first conceived while the team was working with clients with it's Mashup Hub technology (now part of IBM's Lotus Mashup Center). The clients, who happened to be in the insurance and financial services sectors, had valuable data was "locked up" in their legacy 3270 and 5250 systems...and needed to be able to expose that information for consumption by more modern systems and applications. With this technology, jStart enables companies to leverage that data with new applications...and without the costly expense of porting the data over or rewiring existing systems.

Our commitment to a smarter planet
Being at the forefront of emerging technologies for IBM, jStart has naturally been involved in creating smarter, more intelligent systems since it's inception. Most recently, the team has focused on creating more intelligent content syndication systems, intelligent, cross-communications widgets, intelligently gathering diverse and complex unstructured data and analyzing and visualizing such data, and intelligently instrumenting existing networks for event detection and response.
