Neuer z/OS Release Zeitplan (13.3.2012)
Today, the following information regarding z/OS has been provided to our US SHARE clients, and will be provided to GSE clients on Thursday (14. - 16.3.2012 die 101.Tagung z/OS in Lahnstein). This information is for early discussion, and the directional announcement will follow in the next 60 days.
Clients have told us that they find the frequency of installing z/OS releases difficult to keep up with and would prefer to focus their resources on their applications in support of business growth. They are upgrading z/OS more frequently than they would ideally like to in order to remain in a supported environment. Based on this feedback, z/OS is announcing a two year release cycle and therefore, the next release of z/OS will be in the second half of 2013.
Ideally, clients install z/OS releases in order to gain the value from new function available in a release. With the current annual release cycle, z/OS function is often rolled out over several successive releases which makes the value of new functions more difficult for clients to recognize. With a two year release cycle, IBM has the opportunity to deliver more complete function in a release, with more value visible to clients. Support for select items between releases, e.g. for new hardware, will be available through vehicles such as SPE's.
IBM plans to enhance its support periods, including extended support, to align accordingly. The N-2 coexistence policy for z/OS releases will continue. Longer support will be available for new z/OS releases, and adjustments will be made to support for available releases (z/OS 1.12 and z/OS 1.13) to allow clients to bridge to the new release cycle.
More information will be available with the directional announcement for z/OS.
The following Q&A may also be helpful:
z/OS Q&A
- What changes to z/OS are planned?
In response to customer requests, a z/OS release schedule of approximately every two years is planned. Changes to service and support for some existing releases will also be made in order to better assist customers in their migration efforts. - Why is the change being made?
We are making this change in response to customer requests for more time to install and consume their releases. Customers want to invest their resources in exploiting the next z/OS release and not focus efforts on installation and support. This new schedule will afford them more time to do so. - When will the next release of z/OS be available?
The next release of z/OS is planned to be available in the second half of 2013. - What should customer expectations be about the timing of future z/OS releases?
z/OS is planned to make a new release available on a schedule of approximately every two years, providing customers ample time to drive growth and application deployments. - What does a z/OS release every two years mean to customers?
A z/OS release every other year gives customers more time to develop new applications under z/OS and more fully utilize the function in new z/OS releases. It allows customers to spend more time on planning the release and understanding /using the new features in the release. - How does this announcement affect z/OSMF release schedules?
Historically, z/OSMF releases have been aligned with z/OS operating system releases. IBM plans to deliver z/OSMF with z/OS operating system releases approximately every two years beginning in the second half of 2013. - What are the support periods for z/OS releases with the new two year cycle?
Support for Release 12 and 13 will be extended to bridge customers to the new release cycle effectively and seamlessly. We intend to keep the N-2 compatibility allowing customers to migrate 1 or 2 releases forward, now every 2 or 4 years. Additional details will be provided in the next 60 days.
