Features and benefits
IBM® Data Studio is a no-charge offering designed to provide database developers and DBAs with the basic set of required tools for database development and administration for IBM Data Servers.
Data Studio is available in two packaging options:
The integrated development environment (IDE) package includes all administrative capabilities as well as an integrated Eclipse development environment for Java, XML, and Web services. This package can enhance team alignment, control, and efficiency through integration with the IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform. You can install this version with compatible Eclipse-based products such as InfoSphere Data Architect, Optim Development Studio, Optim Database Administrator, and Optim Query Tuner within the same Eclipse instance (shell share), providing seamless movement between data-centric roles, or to share objects across geographically distributed teams.
The stand-alone package, new for this release, is a lighter weight offering designed specifically for administrators to get up and running quickly and easily. This package does not include some of the data development capabilities available in the IDE package and cannot be installed with other products to extend its capabilities. However, should you later decide to move to the IDE-based package, the work you do in the stand-alone package will be preserved and accessible from the IDE package.

You can use Data Studio to:
Design data access queries and routines taking advantage of analysis of current data distribution. Use entity-relationship (ER) diagramming support to visualize designs.
For enhanced capability in designing and modeling data and integration, install Data Studio with InfoSphere Data Architect.Create, edit, and run SQL queries, and visualize access paths using Visual Explain.
For query tuning advisors and additional query formatting capabilities for DB2, install Data Studio with Optim Query Tuner.Build, test, optimize and deploy SQL and Java stored procedures with the interactive routine debugger. Leverage drag and drop query builders and comprehensive SQL and XQuery editors with interactive feedback for DB2 and IDS. Provides DB2 PL/SQL procedure tooling support for DB2 9.7 in Oracle compatibility mode.
Java stored procedure support is not available in the stand-alone Data Studio package.
To extend procedure support for Oracle databases, install Data Studio with Optim Development Studio.Deliver data directly into new or existing Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) solutions. Create Web services from vetted database assets by dragging and dropping existing SQL statements or stored procedures.
Web services support is not available in the stand-alone Data Studio package.
In situations where guaranteed delivery is a must, install Data Studio with Optim Development Studio to support Java Message Service (JMS) and deployment to WebSphere® DataPower® XML Integration Appliance XI50 appliances.Develop SQLJ applications for DB2 in a Java project. SQLJ is a way to provide static support for Java applications that access DB2 databases.
SQLJ tooling support is not available in the stand-alone Data Studio package.
To take advantage of the pureQuery Java API across heterogeneous databases or the ability to leverage static SQL for existing Java applications, even those created using Hibernate or other Java frameworks, install Data Studio with Optim Development Studio and Optim pureQuery Runtime.Manage objects and privileges. Connect to DB2 or IDS databases and create, alter, and drop objects using editors and wizards. Export and import database connections. Modify privileges of users, groups, and roles on data objects such as tables, triggers, and more.
For enhanced change management capabilities including script-controlled complex database changes for DB2 Linux, UNIX, and Windows, install Data Studio with Optim Database Administrator.
For DB2 Linux, UNIX, and Windows, Data Studio includes additional capabilities to facilitate the transition from DB2 Control Center (deprecated in Version 9.7):
Manage DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows instances (start and stop, quiesce, catalog), configure automatic maintenance
Additional database level support including start/ stop, drop, quiesce, backup and recover roll forward, configure database logging and automatic maintenance, force off applications.
Manage objects and data, even in DPF environments: Reorg tables and indexes, load, import, export, set table integrity.
Configure high availability disaster recovery (HADR)
