What’s New in IBM InfoSphere Warehouse 10?

Information Management software

Real-time operational analytics empowering organizations to make active, timely and informed decisions as business events occur

Effective April 30, 2012, the new InfoSphere Warehouse 10 based on DB2 10 includes a new set of advanced capabilities to enable real-time operational analytics.

Key benefits of InfoSphere Warehouse 10.1

Improved Cost Efficiencies

Higher Performance

Increased Team Productivity

Continuous Ingest
In more traditional warehouse environments, additional data would be loaded periodically once a day, once and week or even perhaps once a month. InfoSphere Warehouse and its ingest feature is able to continuously data from multiple sources throughout the organization continuously, while optimizing the resource utilization across all the data sources.

Multi-Temperature Data Management
As warehouses grow in size the storage costs also escalates. However, at the same time service level agreements for access to the warehouse are getting tighter for certain mission-critical warehouse information. Multi-temperature storage management feature allows warehouse data to be spread across multiple tiers of storage (tiers possibly being defined by either speed of the device and/or cost of the storage). The optimizer and workload management can then take advantage of this information about the priority and type of storage to enhance the query performance for hotter data, while at the same time lowering resources given to lower priority queries accessing archival or cold storage.

Time Travel Query
The relevance of data within a warehouse often degrades significant over time. For example, Knowing the specific updates to a customers record throughout the day may provide valuable insight to a customers activity patterns, however that same days activities two days later may no longer be necessary to store within the warehouse. Temporal Table support allows table definitions to be enhanced to define the relevance of transitional changes within the rows stored within the table. After those changes reach a certain defined threshold those historical (temporal) changes will be removed the table. This new feature for database tables within the warehouse now gives users to utilize temporal analytics and gain new insight into the patterns and more transient activities of their business. Allowing to new insights to be derived that would either have been to expense to manage or store within the warehouse before.

Improved Efficiency & Performance for BI Queries
Industry-leading efficiency in collating multiple data formats including unstructured data resulting in a 3x or more performance improvement for standard star-schema types of business intelligence complex query types. Intelligent analytic queries optimization help reduce I/O to reduce the resource requirements for heavy workloads.

Deeper Security through Fine Grain Access Controls
Fine grain access control allows users or groups to only see data they are allowed to see – and not even know the other data is there or see it masked (example credit card numbers with only the last four digit visible). Simplified security through quick setup and standardization of security features for customers means that the security policies can be controlled, monitored and ensured to be enforced by the database. Reducing the management and complexity for customers trying to manage these policies and procedures within applications and business groups. This also provides the ability to host multi-tenant warehouses using fine grained access control to limit the access to a single tenants information and therefore leverage resource costs across multiple warehouse clients.

Storage savings and better performance
Adaptive Compression improves the leading compression technology found in prior versions by adaptively determining the optimal compression between row and page based compression. In InfoSphere Warehouse v10 the expected compression ratio will improve by nearly 30% from prior versions. Combined with InfoSphere Warehouse and the Terabyte charge metric (pay for only the post-compression user data volume) customer will now be able to store more raw warehouse data on less storage with improved performance to query that data. Adaptive compression removes the need to completely rebuild compression dictionaries as data grows and the need to periodically perform table reorganizations is also decreased.
