To access an IMS™ database, a Java™ application needs information about that database. The IMS Enterprise Suite DLIModel utility plug-in transforms your IMS database information (program specification blocks, database descriptions, and COBOL copybooks or PL/I includes) into application-independent metadata.
In addition to creating metadata, you can also use the DLIModel utility plug-in in an Eclipse application development environment to:
- Generate XML schemas of IMS databases, which can retrieve XML data from or store XML data in IMS databases
- Incorporate additional field information from COBOL copybooks or PL/I includes (requires Rational Developer for System z or Rational Application Developer for Websphere Software with Java EE Connector (J2C) tools)
- Use a graphical editor to incorporate additional PCB, segment, and field information, or override existing information
- Generate one graphic file (in JPG or BMP format) for each PCB or a DLIModel report, which helps Java application programmers develop applications based on existing IMS database structures
- Generate an optional DLIModel trace log
- Generate database Web services
These versions of the DLIModel utility are available:
- IMS Enterprise Suite DLIModel utility plug-in: An Eclipse plug-in that can be installed with IBM Eclipse SDK or shell-shared with an existing Rational Application Developer Software for WebSphere®, or Rational Developer for System z, via IBM Installation Manager.
- IMS DLIModel utility plug-in: A Web download version that runs as a plug-in to Eclipse, WebSphere Developer for zSeries®, Rational Application Developer Software for WebSphere, and Rational Developer for System z.
- DLIModel utility: An IMS-shipped version that runs from UNIX® System Services or from the z/OS® BPXBATCH utility. The IMS-shipped version of the DLIModel utility is packaged with your IMS system and is recommended for existing mainframe users who have experience with IMS or z/OS development. To run this version of the utility, you must write a control statement.
Recommendation
IMS Version 10 is the last release of IMS to include in its base the IMS-shipped version of the DLIModel utility. To take advantage of the most current DLIModel utility plug-in features, customers using the IMS Version 10 DLIModel utility should migrate to the IMS Enterprise Suite DLIModel utility plug-in, which is part of the IMS Enterprise Suite V1.1.
